Ithiel Town (1784–1844) was an American architect and civil engineer whose lattice truss bridge design and Greek Revival buildings shaped the early infrastructure and architectural identity of the United States. His patented Town lattice truss became the standard for wooden bridges, while his partnership with Alexander Jackson Davis produced iconic public and private structures.
Born in Thompson, Connecticut, Town initially trained as a carpenter and builder, but his mechanical aptitude led him to engineering. In 1820 he patented the Town lattice truss, a design using a series of diagonal planks bolted together to form a lightweight yet strong bridge framework. This innovation allowed rapid, inexpensive construction of long-span bridges using readily available timber, and it was widely adopted for covered bridges across the Northeast and beyond. The design's efficiency was so notable that it remained in use for railroad bridges well into the 19th century, and modern replicas still employ its principles.
Town's architectural practice, based in New Haven and later New York City, became a leading force in the Greek Revival style. He collaborated with Alexander Jackson Davis from 1829 to 1835, producing notable works such as the Connecticut State Capitol (1831) and the New York Custom House (1833–1842). Town's designs emphasized monumental porticos, Doric and Ionic columns, and symmetrical massing, drawing directly from ancient Greek precedents. His influence extended through published pattern books and his role as a mentor to younger architects, helping to codify the style that dominated American public architecture for decades.
Beyond his famous works, Town was a pioneering figure in architectural education and preservation. He amassed one of the first significant architectural libraries in America, which he used to train apprentices and which later formed part of the collection at the American Antiquarian Society. He also designed the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford (1842), one of the earliest Gothic Revival public buildings in the U.S., showing his stylistic range. Town's engineering work extended to canal and railroad projects, and he served as a consultant for the Erie Railroad. His lesser-known contributions include the design of the New Haven City Hall and the original Trinity Church in New Haven, both of which were later demolished.
Town's legacy is twofold: his lattice truss revolutionized bridge engineering, and his architectural output helped define the visual character of the young republic. Although his buildings were often altered or razed, his influence persisted through the work of his students and the widespread adoption of his bridge design. Modern historians recognize Town as a key figure in the professionalization of American architecture, bridging the gap between artisan builders and formally trained professionals. His papers and drawings, preserved in archives such as the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library, continue to inform scholarship on early American design.
