Insecticide follows the classic point-and-click adventure formula, with players controlling Detective Dill as she explores environments, collects items, and solves puzzles. The Xbox 360 version incorporates a control scheme adapted for a gamepad, while the PC version uses traditional mouse controls. However, many noted that the game was too short, with a playtime of roughly 6–8 hours, and that the puzzles were often straightforward. The game has since become a cult classic among adventure game enthusiasts, and its developers later went on to create the Puzzle Agent series for Telltale Games.

Insecticide was originally conceived as a multi-platform franchise, with plans for a sequel that never materialized due to the closure of Gamecock Media Group in 2009. The game's voice cast includes Kath Soucie, a prolific voice actress known for roles in The Powerpuff Girls and Rugrats. The game's soundtrack was composed by Jared Emerson-Johnson, who later became a prominent composer for Telltale Games.
