Biography
Immanuel Nobel (1801–1872) was a Swedish engineer, inventor, and industrialist, best known as the father of Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Prizes. His own career spanned architecture, mechanical engineering, and explosives manufacturing, and he pioneered the use of underwater mines and the industrial application of nitroglycerin.
Immanuel Nobel was born on March 24, 1801, in Gävle, Sweden, to a family with modest means. His father was a barber-surgeon, and Immanuel initially trained as a sailor before turning to architecture and engineering. He studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, where he excelled in mechanical drawing and design.1
In the 1820s, Nobel worked as a building contractor and architect in Stockholm, designing residential and industrial buildings. He also experimented with prefabricated wooden houses, a novel concept at the time. Nobel's detonator used a charge of black powder to set off the nitroglycerin, making it safer to handle.4
In 1863, he founded the world's first nitroglycerin factory in Heleneborg, Stockholm. The factory was plagued by accidents, including a devastating explosion in 1864 that killed his youngest son, Emil, and several workers. Despite this tragedy, Nobel continued his work, and his son Alfred later refined the process by inventing dynamite in 1867, which stabilized nitroglycerin with diatomaceous earth.
After the 1864 explosion, Immanuel Nobel's health declined, and he suffered a stroke in 1865 that left him partially paralyzed. He spent his remaining years in Stockholm, where he died on September 3, 1872. His contributions to engineering and explosives were overshadowed by his son Alfred's fame, but his influence on the family's industrial trajectory was profound.5
