Iannis Xenakis (1922–2001) was a Greek-French composer, architect, and pioneer of electronic and computer music whose work joined mathematical processes, massed sound, and architectural form. His compositions challenged conventional ideas of melody and musical time while his designs extended modernist architecture into monumental, mathematically organized spaces.
Xenakis’s artistic formation combined Greek political experience, engineering, architecture, and music. Born in Brăila to Greek parents, he studied engineering in Athens and joined the Greek resistance during the Second World War. After the civil conflict, he fled Greece and settled in France, where he worked in Le Corbusier’s architectural studio from 1947 to 1959.1 He studied composition with Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatoire, although he developed a markedly different approach from the serialism dominant in postwar European music.
Architecture gave Xenakis practical experience with geometry, materials, proportion, and large-scale spatial organization. His collaboration with Le Corbusier included work on the Unité d'habitation in Nantes-Rezé and the Philips Pavilion at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. The pavilion’s design, for which Xenakis played a major role, enclosed Edgar Varèse’s electronic composition Poème électronique in a sweeping, hyperbolic structure.2
Xenakis replaced traditional thematic development with organized transformations of sound masses, densities, and probabilities. In Metastaseis (1953–54), glissando lines for strings generate changing planes of sound; its title derives from a Greek term associated with transformation. He later used mathematical models, including probability theory and game theory, to determine aspects of rhythm, pitch, articulation, and orchestration, while retaining direct artistic control over the resulting structures.3
Works such as Pithoprakta (1955–56), Achorripsis (1956–57), ST/10-1,080262 (1956–62), and Terretektorh (1965–66) demonstrate different treatments of stochastic organization and spatialized performance. Xenakis did not regard mathematics as a substitute for musical judgment; rather, it supplied formal procedures for handling complexity that ordinary notation and intuition could not easily manage.
Computer-assisted composition became central to Xenakis’s later practice. In 1966 he founded the Centre d'Études de Mathématique et Automatique Musicales, known as CEMaMu, in Paris, developing systems that allowed composers to generate and manipulate complex musical structures with computers. His UPIC system, developed with collaborators, converted graphic drawings into sound: users could draw curves and shapes that determined pitch and duration, making composition possible without conventional notation.
Electronic works including Bohor (1962), Hibiki-Hana-Ma (1969–70), and Polytope de Cluny (1972) combine synthesized or processed sound with theatrical lighting and architectural space. The term “polytope” describes several of his multimedia environments, in which projected light, moving performers, and electronic sound formed a single temporal and spatial artwork. These projects anticipated later interests in sound installation, audiovisual performance, and computer-based composition.
Xenakis’s work often treated the audience’s physical position as a compositional variable. In Terretektorh, musicians are distributed among the listeners, so instrumental sound appears to move through the hall rather than originate from a fixed stage. Persephassa (1969), written for six percussionists, similarly depends on circular placement and surrounding rhythmic activity.4
He also wrote extensively about his methods, especially in Musiques formelles, later published in English as Formalized Music. His ideas influenced composers, architects, computer-music researchers, and artists working with algorithmic systems, although his own music cannot be reduced to a single formula. The mathematical procedures vary considerably across his catalogue, and many works retain expressive features rooted in Greek tragedy, ritual, violence, and the experience of collective human movement.
His legacy includes not only concert works but also a model of interdisciplinary practice in which architecture, acoustics, mathematics, computation, and performance are treated as connected forms of spatial thinking.
