IBM

IBM is an American multinational technology company formerly known as International Business Machines. Founded in 1911 as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company, it became one of the most influential firms in the development of business data processing, mainframe computers, software, and enterprise services.1

Origins and corporate formation

IBM began as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR), formed in 1911 through the consolidation of businesses that made commercial scales, time-recording equipment, and tabulating machines.1 Its early products processed information encoded on punched cards, allowing governments and businesses to organize large volumes of records more efficiently than manual methods.

Thomas J. Watson Sr. joined CTR in 1914 and built a sales-driven corporate culture around standardized products, service contracts, and the slogan “THINK.” Under his leadership, the company broadened its international operations and changed its name to International Business Machines Corporation in 1924. IBM’s early growth was closely tied to census administration, payroll, inventory control, and other institutional applications rather than consumer electronics.

The mainframe era and computing architecture

IBM’s System/360, announced in 1964, established a compatible family of computers that let customers move among models while preserving software investments. This approach helped make the mainframe a durable platform for banking, airlines, government agencies, scientific institutions, and large corporations. IBM also supplied operating systems, peripherals, programming tools, and maintenance, creating an integrated enterprise-computing ecosystem.

The company’s influence extended beyond hardware. IBM researchers contributed to magnetic storage, database technology, programming languages, semiconductor research, and human-computer interaction. The IBM PC, introduced in 1981, helped standardize a major segment of personal computing, although the wider PC industry soon developed around compatible machines made by other companies and software supplied by Microsoft.2

Restructuring and modern business lines

IBM’s business changed sharply in the early 1990s, when the company faced falling demand for proprietary hardware and severe competitive pressure. Chief executive Louis V. Gerstner Jr. emphasized integrated services and customer systems rather than breaking IBM into separate hardware and software companies. The strategy restored profitability while preserving the company’s role in large-scale computing.

In the twenty-first century, IBM expanded through acquisitions and divestitures into software, consulting, hybrid cloud, infrastructure, and artificial intelligence. Its purchase of Red Hat in 2019 strengthened its hybrid-cloud portfolio, while the 2021 separation of Kyndryl made managed infrastructure services an independent company.3 IBM continues to sell mainframe systems, including the z Systems family, alongside enterprise software and consulting services.

Research, AI, and lesser-known aspects

IBM Research has remained a distinctive part of the company, operating laboratories across several countries and producing work in areas such as materials science, semiconductors, cryptography, quantum computing, and artificial intelligence.4 IBM’s Watson system gained public attention after defeating champions on the quiz program Jeopardy! in 2011, demonstrating advances in natural-language question answering while also exposing the difference between a specialized system and general human intelligence.

Less visible contributions include the relational database work associated with Edgar F. Codd, IBM’s long-running role in magnetic disk storage, and its extensive patent portfolio. IBM has also been an important corporate participant in open-source software and standards, including Linux and the Eclipse development platform. Its quantum-computing program uses superconducting quantum processors and cloud-accessible experiments, but practical large-scale quantum advantage remains a research objective rather than a settled commercial capability.5
