Hope Sandoval

Hope Sandoval was born in 1966 in Los Angeles, California, to Mexican immigrant parents. Growing up in East Los Angeles, she was drawn to music at an early age, influenced by folk, blues, and the Velvet Underground. In the mid-1980s, she formed the band Going Home with friend Sylvia Gomez, which caught the attention of David Roback, a guitarist from the Paisley Underground scene. Roback and Sandoval began collaborating, eventually forming Mazzy Star in 1989. Their partnership blended Sandoval's haunting vocals with Roback's psychedelic-tinged guitar work, creating a sound that would become synonymous with dream pop.

Mazzy Star's debut album, She Hangs Brightly (1990), established the band's brooding aesthetic, but it was their second album, So Tonight That I Might See (1993), that brought mainstream success. The single "Fade into You" became an unexpected hit, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and later being featured in numerous films and television shows. The song's sparse arrangement and Sandoval's breathy delivery made it an enduring anthem of 1990s alternative rock. Despite the band's success, Sandoval remained notoriously private, rarely giving interviews and avoiding the spotlight, which only heightened her mystique.

After Mazzy Star went on hiatus in the late 1990s, Sandoval pursued other projects. In 2000, she formed the duo Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions with Colm Ó Cíosóig of My Bloody Valentine. Their debut album, Bavarian Fruit Bread (2001), showcased a more acoustic, folk-influenced sound. She has also collaborated with artists such as Massive Attack, contributing vocals to their 1998 album Mezzanine on the track "Paradise Circus" (though that track appeared on a later release) and to the song "The Spoils" in 2016. Sandoval's solo work retains her signature ethereal style while exploring darker, more experimental textures.

Beyond her music, Sandoval is known for her reclusive lifestyle, rarely appearing in public or on social media. She has a deep interest in visual arts and has designed some of her album artwork. In 2013, Mazzy Star released Seasons of Your Day, their first album in 17 years, which was recorded in Roback's home studio. Sandoval has also contributed vocals to tracks by the Chemical Brothers and Bert Jansch. Her influence extends to a new generation of artists, with bands like Beach House and Cigarettes After Sex citing her as an inspiration. Despite her low profile, her impact on dream pop and alternative music remains significant.
