Henry Walter Bates (1825–1892) was an English naturalist and explorer whose Amazonian fieldwork established the foundation for the study of mimicry in nature. His concept of Batesian mimicry—where a harmless species evolves to resemble a harmful one—became a cornerstone of evolutionary biology.
Henry Walter Bates was born in Leicester, England, in 1825, the son of a hosiery manufacturer. Largely self-educated, he developed an early passion for entomology, publishing his first paper on beetles at age 18. In 1844 he met Alfred Russel Wallace, a fellow naturalist, and together they conceived a plan to explore the Amazon rainforest to gather evidence for evolution. They set sail in 1848, but after two years Wallace returned home (and later lost his collections in a shipwreck). Bates remained for a further nine years, traveling up the Amazon and its tributaries, collecting over 14,000 species, of which about 8,000 were new to science. His journey was arduous: he suffered from malaria, yellow fever, and near-starvation, yet he persisted, eventually returning to England in 1859 with a vast collection that would occupy him for decades.
Bates's most enduring contribution was his explanation of mimicry among Amazonian butterflies. He noticed that certain edible species closely resembled distasteful, toxic species, and he proposed that this resemblance evolved because predators that learned to avoid the toxic models also avoided the mimics. This was the first explanation of mimicry in terms of natural selection, and it provided powerful support for Darwin's theory. Bates presented his findings in a famous 1861 paper to the Linnean Society, and Darwin himself praised it as 'one of the most remarkable and admirable' contributions to evolutionary biology. Bates's concept, now known as Batesian mimicry, remains a fundamental principle in ecology and evolutionary biology, with applications ranging from the study of warning coloration to the evolution of deceptive strategies in plants and animals.
After returning to England, Bates devoted himself to cataloguing his collections and writing his magnum opus, The Naturalist on the River Amazons (1863), which became a classic of travel literature and natural history. He served as assistant secretary of the Royal Geographical Society from 1864 until his death in 1892, where he edited journals and supported other explorers. Bates was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1881 and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Leipzig. His work influenced not only evolutionary biology but also the development of ecology and the study of biodiversity. The Batesian mimicry concept is now a standard topic in textbooks, and his Amazonian collections remain important reference specimens in the Natural History Museum, London.
Beyond mimicry, Bates made many other contributions that are less widely known. He was among the first to describe the phenomenon of 'mimicry rings'—groups of unrelated species that converge on a shared warning pattern. He also documented the seasonal variation in butterfly wing patterns, an early observation of phenotypic plasticity. Bates's meticulous field notes on the distribution of species along the Amazon provided early evidence for the role of rivers as barriers to species dispersal, a topic later explored by Wallace and others. He also described the 'Batesian' hypothesis of protective resemblance in insects, which extends beyond mimicry to include camouflage and other deceptive strategies. Bates's correspondence with Darwin reveals his deep engagement with evolutionary theory, and his letters are preserved in the Darwin Correspondence Project.
