Guarino Guarini (1624–1683) was a 17th-century Italian architect, mathematician, and priest whose buildings fused theatrical Baroque space with geometric invention. Best known for his work in Turin, he designed churches, palaces, and a celebrated chapel for the Holy Shroud, while also publishing influential mathematical, philosophical, and architectural works.
Guarini’s career joined religious vocation, mathematical study, and architectural practice. Born in Modena in 1624, he entered the Theatine order as a young man and spent part of his early career teaching philosophy and mathematics. His assignments took him to several Italian cities and to Prague, Lisbon, and Paris, exposing him to different architectural traditions and courtly settings.1
Guarini was not simply a designer working within established Baroque formulas. His books treated geometry, astronomy, philosophy, and building, and his architectural thinking depended on the transformation of abstract figures into structural and spatial effects. Placita philosophica appeared in 1665, while Euclides adauctus developed mathematical themes. His major architectural treatise, Architettura civile, was published posthumously in 1737.2
Turin became the principal setting for Guarini’s mature architectural language. Invited by the House of Savoy, he worked on churches and secular buildings in the expanding capital, where dynastic ambition encouraged monumental experimentation. His best-known surviving works include the Chapel of the Holy Shroud, the church of San Lorenzo, and Palazzo Carignano.3
These buildings manipulate the visitor’s perception through complex plans, interlocking arches, curved walls, and controlled light. San Lorenzo’s central space rises toward a seemingly weightless dome formed by layered ribs and openings. The Chapel of the Holy Shroud uses a dramatic ascent of arches and a dark-to-light progression to frame the relic’s sanctuary. Palazzo Carignano translates similar formal energy into a civic palace, with a swelling brick façade whose movement contrasts with more restrained palace fronts.4
Guarini’s distinctiveness lies in making geometry visible as architectural motion. Rather than treating geometry only as a method for proportion, he used interpenetrating polygons, rotated figures, conical forms, and skeletal vaults to generate spaces that appear unstable yet remain carefully organized. His designs often conceal the transition between wall, arch, and dome, encouraging the eye to follow a continuous upward movement.2
Light is an equally important structural and theological instrument. Hidden or elevated openings filter illumination through ribs and screens, producing effects that change as a visitor moves through the building. This approach belongs to the broader European Baroque concern with spectacle, movement, and emotional participation, but Guarini’s mathematical constructions give it an unusually analytical character.5 His work later influenced architects in Piedmont and beyond, including Filippo Juvarra and Bernardo Vittone.
Guarini’s international career and technical writing broaden his importance beyond Turin’s famous monuments. Before his Savoyard period, he worked in Messina, where he designed or developed projects for Theatine institutions, and he spent time in Lisbon before the earthquake that destroyed much of the city in 1755. Some attributions and reconstructions remain debated because drawings, commissions, and later alterations do not always preserve a complete record.1
His influence also traveled through print. Architettura civile circulated ideas about perspective, stereotomy, vault construction, and ornamental composition at a moment when architectural treatises were key vehicles for international exchange. The Turin buildings are now part of the UNESCO-listed Residences of the Royal House of Savoy, whose ensemble reflects the political and cultural ambitions of the Savoy court.6 Guarini therefore belongs equally to the histories of architecture, mathematics, religious culture, and scientific illustration.
Guarini’s surviving buildings have often undergone restoration and alteration; descriptions of their original appearance should therefore be read alongside architectural and conservation studies.
