History and methodology

The Green500 was introduced in 2007 by Wu-chun Feng and his research group at Virginia Tech, in response to growing concerns about the power consumption of supercomputers. The list is compiled from data submitted to the TOP500 project, which collects performance results from the LINPACK benchmark. The Green500 ranks systems by their energy efficiency, calculated as the ratio of LINPACK performance (in gigaflops) to the average power consumption (in watts) during the benchmark run.

Initially, the Green500 used a separate measurement approach, but since 2008 it has relied on the power data reported by TOP500. The list is updated twice a year, coinciding with the TOP500 releases at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) and the Supercomputing Conference (SC). The methodology has been refined over time, including the introduction of a 'Green500 List' that separates systems using different measurement standards.

Notable rankings and trends

Early leaders of the Green500 included IBM's Blue Gene/L systems, which achieved high efficiency through low-power processors. In 2008, a system from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, based on IBM's Cell processor, topped the list. Since the mid-2010s, GPU-accelerated systems, particularly those using NVIDIA GPUs, have dominated the top ranks. For example, in 2020, the Japanese supercomputer Fugaku, based on ARM processors, was ranked second, while a system from the Japanese RIKEN institute took the top spot.

The Green500 has also highlighted the rise of specialized hardware, such as the PEZY-SC processors used in Japan's Gyoukou system, which briefly held the top position in 2017. More recently, systems using NVIDIA's A100 and H100 GPUs have consistently achieved high efficiency, with some exceeding 60 gigaflops per watt.

The Green500 has influenced the design of modern supercomputers, encouraging vendors to optimize for energy efficiency as well as raw performance. Many top systems now incorporate power management features, liquid cooling, and low-power processors. The list has also been used by policymakers and research institutions to set efficiency targets.

Critics have noted that the Green500 relies on the LINPACK benchmark, which may not represent real-world workloads, and that power measurements can vary depending on the methodology. Some have argued that the list favors systems with short benchmark runs, which may not reflect sustained performance. Despite these limitations, the Green500 remains a widely cited reference for energy-efficient computing.

Lesser-known aspects

One lesser-known fact is that the Green500 originally used a metric called 'MFLOPS/W' (millions of floating-point operations per second per watt) before switching to gigaflops. Another is that the list has a companion 'Green500' for heterogeneous systems, which was introduced to account for systems using different processor types.

The Green500 has also been used to track the efficiency of quantum computers, though such systems are not yet included in the main list.
