The green anaconda (Eunectes murinus) is a large, heavy-bodied, semiaquatic snake native to tropical South America. It belongs to the boa family, Boidae, and is especially adapted to slow-moving rivers, swamps, flooded forests, and marshes.
The green anaconda is the heaviest living snake, although reticulated pythons can exceed it in maximum recorded length.1 It is one of four recognized anaconda species in the genus Eunectes, and its name distinguishes it from the yellow, dark-spotted, and Bolivian anacondas. Adults have an olive, brownish-green, or gray-green ground color marked by large black-edged oval spots and smaller yellow or cream markings along the flanks.
Its distribution covers much of tropical South America, including the Amazon and Orinoco basins, the Guianas, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.2 The species is strongly associated with wetlands rather than open uplands, and local populations may be separated by dry terrain or seasonal changes in floodplain habitat.
The green anaconda’s massive body, eyes and nostrils positioned high on the head, and muscular tail make it an effective ambush predator in water.1 It is nonvenomous and kills prey by constriction: after seizing an animal with backward-curving teeth, it coils around the victim and prevents normal breathing and circulation. Water supports much of the snake’s weight, allowing an otherwise cumbersome animal to move quietly and efficiently.
Its diet includes fish, turtles, birds, capybaras, caimans, and other vertebrates; prey size varies with the snake’s body size and local opportunity.2 Contrary to popular imagery, anacondas do not routinely consume humans, and large meals are followed by prolonged periods of digestion and inactivity.
Green anacondas give birth to live young rather than laying eggs, a reproductive strategy shared with several other boas.2 Mating generally occurs during the seasonal period when water levels, temperature, and prey availability create favorable conditions. Several males may gather around one female in a breeding aggregation, sometimes forming a slow-moving “mating ball” that can persist for weeks.
Females are substantially larger than males, an extreme form of sexual size dimorphism that is linked to carrying many developing young. Litters commonly contain dozens of neonates, though litter size varies. Newborns are independent immediately after birth and can hunt small prey, swim, and defend themselves without parental care. Juvenile survival is nevertheless limited by predators, flooding, drought, and cannibalism or predation by larger members of the species.
The green anaconda is better understood as a wetland specialist than as a generalized “jungle snake.”3 It can remain submerged for extended periods, using only the upper surfaces of its head above water while scanning for prey. Individuals may also bask on vegetation or banks to regulate body temperature, especially after feeding.
Its conservation status is shaped less by a single dramatic threat than by the cumulative loss and alteration of wetlands, persecution, road mortality, and collection for skins or the wildlife trade.4 Population data remain uneven across its enormous range, so apparent abundance in remote wetlands should not be treated as proof that every regional population is secure. The species is listed in international trade controls through CITES, which regulates commerce in specimens and products rather than prohibiting all use.5
