The Gobi bear (Ursus arctos gobiensis) is a rare subspecies of brown bear native to the Gobi Desert, one of the few bears adapted to an arid, desert environment. It is critically endangered, with a population estimated at fewer than 50 individuals, making it one of the rarest bears on Earth.
The Gobi bear is classified as a subspecies of the brown bear (Ursus arctos), distinguished by genetic and morphological traits. It is omnivorous, feeding on roots, berries, insects, and occasionally small mammals, but it relies heavily on wild rhubarb and other desert plants. Unlike most bears, it does not hibernate fully, entering a state of torpor during the harsh winter months. It is solitary and has a large home range, sometimes covering thousands of square kilometers. The bears are known to travel long distances to find water, often using the few oases and springs in the region. Their activity peaks during the cooler hours of dawn and dusk to avoid the extreme daytime heat.
The Gobi bear is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN, with a population that has remained dangerously low for decades. The main threats include habitat degradation, climate change, and competition with livestock for water and food. The Mongolian government, with support from international organizations, has established the Great Gobi Strictly Protected Area, which covers much of the bear's range. Conservation efforts include supplemental feeding programs, water point maintenance, and genetic monitoring. Despite these measures, the population has shown little growth, and the bears face a high risk of extinction due to stochastic events and inbreeding depression. Recent studies have used camera traps and genetic sampling to better understand their ecology and inform management.
The Gobi bear is one of the few bears that never encounters humans in its natural habitat, making it extremely shy and elusive. It is also one of the smallest brown bear subspecies, with males weighing only around 100–120 kg, much less than their northern relatives. The bears have a unique diet that includes the fruit of the Nitraria shrub, which is rich in vitamin C, helping them survive in the nutrient-poor desert.
