This sit-and-wait strategy is typical of trapdoor spiders and helps explain why individuals can remain difficult to detect even in areas where they are locally common.
Females are strongly sedentary: an established burrow may be occupied for decades, with repairs and additions made as the spider grows. Males become more mobile when mature and leave their burrows to search for females, making them more exposed to predators and environmental hazards. Reproduction, growth, and survival are consequently organized around a long-lived female territory rather than frequent relocation.23
The best-known Gaius individual was a female designated Number 16, first recorded as a juvenile in Western Australia in 1974 and followed through a long-term field study. She remained alive for at least 43 years, surpassing earlier records for spider longevity and demonstrating that some mygalomorph females can persist for several decades in natural conditions.2
Her death was associated with a parasitic wasp attack, illustrating that exceptional longevity does not make an individual invulnerable. The record also depended on unusually continuous observation: most spiders are not individually marked and monitored for their entire lives, so maximum lifespans are probably under-recorded. Gaius thus has significance both as a biological extreme and as a case study in the value of patient field research.
Gaius reveals how much spider life history can be missed by short surveys. A female may spend almost its entire adult life beneath one small surface structure, while the conspicuous, dispersing males represent only a brief phase of the species’ existence. Long-term burrow studies can therefore provide information that collecting alone cannot, including survival, recruitment, maturation, and the fate of individual burrows.2
The species is also a useful reminder that conservation concerns can involve apparently hidden organisms. Burrows may be damaged by land clearing, soil disturbance, fire, or changes in vegetation and local moisture regimes even when no spider is visible. Because distributional and population data remain less complete for many trapdoor spiders than for conspicuous animals, taxonomic catalogues and repeated local surveys are important foundations for assessing their status.1
