The firmament is a vast, solid dome or vault that, in ancient Near Eastern cosmology, separated the waters above from the waters below, forming the sky. The concept appears in the Hebrew Bible, where it is called raqia (רָקִיעַ), and it was later adopted into Greek and Latin cosmologies as the firmamentum. It was not merely a poetic metaphor but a physical structure that held up the celestial bodies and served as a boundary for the cosmos.
The concept of a solid sky dome predates the Bible, appearing in Mesopotamian and Egyptian cosmologies. In the Babylonian Enuma Elish (c. 1100 BCE), the god Marduk splits the body of the sea goddess Tiamat, using half to form the sky, which holds back the waters above. Similarly, Egyptian texts describe the sky goddess Nut arching over the earth, her body studded with stars. Dante's Divine Comedy describes the heavens as concentric spheres, with the firmament as the eighth sphere, the realm of fixed stars. The church taught that the firmament was a real, physical entity, and this view persisted until the scientific revolution. Copernicus and Galileo's heliocentric model, along with later discoveries about the atmosphere, gradually dismantled the literal interpretation of the firmament.5
Islamic cosmology, drawing on the Quran and Greek sources, also featured a solid sky. The Quran mentions sama' (sky) as a roof or canopy, and some commentators described seven heavens as physical layers. The 10th-century scholar Ibn al-Haytham wrote a treatise on the structure of the universe, arguing that the heavens were a single sphere, not multiple layers. This view influenced later Islamic astronomy, which eventually moved away from the solid firmament.6
Other cultures, such as the Norse, had similar concepts, with the sky formed from the skull of the giant Ymir. In Hindu cosmology, the sky is often depicted as a canopy, and in Chinese thought, the heavens are a dome over a square earth. These parallels show that the firmament is a widespread human concept, arising from the need to explain the observed sky and the origin of rain.7
One lesser-known aspect is the debate over the firmament's material. Some ancient Jewish sources, like the Talmud, suggest it is made of water and fire, while others describe it as ice or crystal. The Book of Enoch describes the firmament as a crystalline structure with gates for the winds and stars. In Christian art, the firmament is often depicted as a solid canopy with stars attached, as seen in medieval illustrations of the cosmos.4
Another intriguing detail is the connection between the firmament and the concept of the "waters above." These waters were believed to be the source of rain, snow, and hail, and they were sometimes identified with the celestial ocean. In some interpretations, the firmament was thought to have openings (windows) that God could open to release these waters, as in the story of Noah's flood. This idea persisted into the Renaissance, when some natural philosophers still debated the existence of a watery heaven.3
Finally, the firmament has a linguistic legacy: the English word "firmament" comes from the Latin firmamentum, which itself is a translation of the Greek stereoma. The term is still used in poetry and religious language, and it appears in the King James Bible, where it is used to translate raqia in Genesis. Modern astronomy has replaced the concept with the atmosphere and outer space, but the firmament remains a powerful symbol of the ancient worldview.2
