Decentralized Storage

Filecoin

Filecoin is a decentralized storage network and cryptocurrency that incentivizes participants to store and retrieve data through a blockchain-based marketplace. Launched in 2020 by Protocol Labs, it aims to create a secure, efficient, and open alternative to centralized cloud storage providers.

Overview and mechanism

Filecoin is a peer-to-peer network that allows users to rent out unused hard drive space or purchase storage from others. It is built on top of IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) and uses a blockchain to record transactions and enforce agreements. The network's native token, FIL, is used to pay for storage and retrieval services. Miners earn FIL by providing storage capacity and proving they are storing data correctly over time. The system employs cryptographic proofs, such as Proof-of-Replication and Proof-of-Spacetime, to ensure data integrity and availability.1

2

History and development

Filecoin was conceived by Juan Benet, founder of Protocol Labs, who also created IPFS. The project raised over $200 million in its 2017 initial coin offering (ICO), one of the largest at the time. After several years of development and testnet phases, the Filecoin mainnet launched on October 15, 2020. Since then, the network has grown to include numerous storage providers worldwide, with a total storage capacity exceeding 2.8 exabytes by 2024. The project has also spawned a vibrant ecosystem of applications, including NFT storage, data archiving, and decentralized web hosting.

3

Economic model and incentives

Filecoin's economy is designed to align incentives among storage providers, clients, and investors. Storage deals are negotiated on a free market, with prices determined by supply and demand. Clients can choose between different miners based on price, reputation, and geographic location. The network also includes a unique mechanism called 'storage power' that determines a miner's influence in consensus and their share of block rewards. To ensure reliability, miners must lock up collateral in FIL, which is slashed if they fail to meet their obligations. Additionally, a portion of the network's block rewards is vested over time, creating long-term commitment.

4

Lesser-known aspects

Beyond basic storage, Filecoin supports advanced features like 'retrieval markets' for fast content delivery and 'fault tolerance' through erasure coding. The network has also integrated with Ethereum through bridges, enabling smart contracts to interact with Filecoin storage. A notable initiative is the 'Filecoin Plus' program, which introduces a layer of social trust to boost storage of valuable data. Moreover, Filecoin has been used in scientific research, such as storing genomic data and climate datasets. The project also runs a decentralized compute network called 'Lotus' and has explored 'data DAOs' for community-governed storage. These innovations highlight Filecoin's ambition to become a foundational layer for the decentralized web.2
