Fiat Panda

The first-generation Panda (1980–2003) was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, with a minimalist, flat-sided body that maximized interior space. It was initially offered with 652 cc and 903 cc engines, and later a 1.0-liter. The Panda was praised for its low weight (around 700 kg) and rugged simplicity, making it popular in both urban and rural settings. The second generation (2003–2012) adopted a more rounded design by Giuliano Biasio and was built on the Fiat Mini platform. The third generation (2012–present) is based on the Fiat 500 platform and features a more modern, crossover-inspired look. Throughout its life, the Panda has been produced at Fiat's Mirafiori plant in Turin and later at Pomigliano d'Arco.

The Panda has spawned numerous variants, including the popular Panda 4x4 (introduced in 1983), which brought off-road capability to a small city car. The 4x4 version was notable for its low-range gearbox and was used by some European police and rescue services. Other notable variants include the Panda Elettra (1990–1998), an early electric car with a range of about 100 km, and the Panda Trekking, a rugged crossover-style version of the third generation. Special editions have included the Panda 30, 45, 1000, and the high-performance Panda 4x4 Sisley. In 2020, Fiat introduced the Panda Hybrid, a mild-hybrid version, and in 2023 the Panda Cross, a more off-road-oriented trim. The Panda has also been sold under the Autobianchi brand in some markets as the Autobianchi Y10's sibling, though the Y10 was a separate model.

The Panda has become a cultural icon in Italy and across Europe, often seen as a symbol of practical, affordable mobility. It has been a consistent best-seller in Italy, frequently topping the sales charts. In 2012, the third-generation Panda was named European Car of the Year, a testament to its enduring appeal. The Panda has also appeared in films and television, such as the Italian movie 'Il Ciclone' and the TV series 'Inspector Montalbano', where the protagonist drives a Panda. Its simple design has inspired a cult following, with owners' clubs and forums dedicated to preserving and modifying early models. The Panda's longevity is remarkable; it has been in production for over four decades, and Fiat has announced plans to continue producing it alongside the new electric Fiat Grande Panda, which is set to launch in 2024.

Beyond its mainstream success, the Panda has several obscure facets. The first-generation Panda was offered with a 'Panda 4x4' that featured a transfer case with a locking differential, a rarity in such a small car. The Panda Elettra was one of the first production electric cars in Europe, and a few were used by the Italian postal service. In the 1980s, Fiat built a prototype Panda with a diesel engine, but it never reached production. The Panda has also been used as a base for various coachbuilt specials, including a pickup version by Carrozzeria Fissore and a convertible by Savio. In 2023, Fiat introduced the Panda 'Pandina' as a special edition, and the name 'Pandina' is also used for a new entry-level trim. The Panda has a surprisingly strong off-road pedigree; the 4x4 version has won the 'Gincan' rally events in Italy. Additionally, the Panda was one of the first cars to feature a 'flat-folding' rear seat, allowing a completely flat load floor, a feature now common in many small cars.
