A factory ship is a large ocean-going vessel equipped with onboard processing facilities to handle and preserve the catch of a fishing fleet, enabling extended voyages far from shore. These ships serve as floating bases for trawlers or catcher boats, receiving raw fish and transforming them into frozen, canned, or reduced products such as fish meal and oil. The concept revolutionized industrial fishing in the early 20th century, allowing fleets to operate in distant waters for months at a time. The British vessel Fairtry (1954) is often credited as the first modern stern trawler with a factory deck, capable of gutting, freezing, and storing fish at sea. This design allowed fleets to fish distant grounds like the North Atlantic without returning to port, dramatically increasing efficiency. By the 1960s, Soviet and Japanese fleets deployed large factory ships supported by catcher boats, creating floating fish plants that could operate for months. The development of onboard freezing and fish meal plants further extended their range and profitability.
Modern factory ships are equipped with advanced processing lines that sort, gut, fillet, freeze, and pack fish, often using automated machinery and continuous conveyor systems. They also produce fish meal and oil from offcuts and bycatch, maximizing resource use. Many vessels have onboard laboratories for quality control and satellite-linked navigation and communication systems. The largest factory trawlers, such as the Arctic Viking or the Atlantic Dawn, can process over 200 tonnes of fish per day and store thousands of tonnes in refrigerated holds. Some are designed for specific fisheries, such as krill, where they use continuous pumping systems to harvest and process the tiny crustaceans into meal and oil.
Factory ships have transformed global fisheries by enabling economies of scale, but they also contribute to overfishing and habitat damage. Their efficiency can lead to rapid depletion of fish stocks, as seen in the collapse of North Atlantic cod fisheries in the 1990s. International regulations, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and regional fisheries management organizations, impose quotas and gear restrictions, but enforcement remains challenging on the high seas. The use of factory ships in distant waters has also raised labor concerns, with reports of forced labor and poor working conditions on some vessels. In response, some countries have implemented port state measures and vessel monitoring systems to improve oversight.
Beyond fishing, factory ships have been adapted for other purposes, such as the MV Arctic which was used as a fish processing vessel in the 1970s and later converted to an offshore supply ship. The Japanese whaling fleet's factory ship Nisshin Maru is one of the few remaining whaling factory ships, operating under scientific permits despite international controversy. In the 1980s, the Soviet Union operated a fleet of factory ships that also served as floating fish markets, selling directly to foreign ports. Some factory ships are equipped with helicopter pads for crew rotation and medical evacuation, and a few have onboard hospitals and recreational facilities. The term 'factory ship' also appears in science fiction, such as in the novel Moby-Dick (though not by that name) and in the game EVE Online, where players can build and operate such vessels.
