Early life and career

Erling Braut Haaland was born on 21 July 2000 in Leeds, England, while his father, former footballer Alfie Haaland, played for Leeds United. The family moved back to Norway when Erling was three, settling in Bryne. He joined the local club Bryne FK's youth academy, where his physical and technical development was accelerated by a focus on athleticism and finishing. He made his senior debut for Bryne in 2016 at age 15, and after a brief stint with Molde FK under Ole Gunnar Solskjær, he moved to Red Bull Salzburg in 2019. His Champions League hat-trick for Salzburg against Genk made him the third-youngest player to score a hat-trick in the competition.

Rise to stardom

Haaland's explosive performances at Salzburg, including 29 goals in 27 matches, attracted Europe's elite. In January 2020, he joined Borussia Dortmund, where he scored a hat-trick on his debut as a substitute, and became the fastest player to reach 25 Champions League goals. His 2021–22 season saw him score 86 goals in all competitions, a record for a player under 22. In 2022, Manchester City activated his €60 million release clause, and he immediately transformed their attack, scoring 52 goals in all competitions in his first season, including 36 in the Premier League, breaking the single-season record held by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole.

International career and playing style

Haaland made his senior Norway debut in 2019 and has since become the nation's all-time leading scorer, surpassing Jørgen Juve's record in 2022. His playing style is characterized by explosive acceleration, physical dominance, and a poacher's instinct in the box. He is left-footed but scores with both feet and his head, and his off-the-ball movement creates constant danger. Despite his goal-scoring focus, he has improved his link-up play under Pep Guardiola, though he remains primarily a penalty-box finisher. His record of 9 goals in a single match for Norway against Honduras in the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup remains a tournament record.

Lesser-known aspects

Beyond his on-field exploits, Haaland is known for his unusual sleep and nutrition regimen, including a diet of beef heart and liver, and a cold-immersion routine. He has a tattoo of the word 'Memento Mori' on his arm, reflecting a stoic mindset. His father's career was cut short by a tackle from Roy Keane, which Haaland has said fuels his motivation. He is also an avid gamer and has a sponsorship deal with the gaming brand HyperX. In 2023, he was named the UEFA Men's Player of the Year and the Premier League Player of the Season, and he has been shortlisted for the Ballon d'Or multiple times. His transfer to Manchester City included a release clause reportedly set to activate in 2024, making him a potential target for Real Madrid.
