Eric Stonestreet

Stonestreet was born on September 9, 1971, in Kansas City, Kansas, and raised in the Piper area of the state. He attended Kansas State University, where he studied sociology and theater, graduating in 1996. After college, he moved to Chicago and joined the Second City improvisational comedy troupe, honing his comedic timing and character work.

His early television credits include guest roles on ER, Malcolm in the Middle, and The West Wing, often playing quirky or menacing characters. He also appeared in films such as Bad Teacher and The Loft, but his breakout came in 2009 when he was cast as Cameron Tucker, a flamboyant, sensitive father and husband, on Modern Family.²

Stonestreet's portrayal of Cameron Tucker, one half of the show's gay couple alongside Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), earned critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase. He won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2010 and 2012, and was nominated five times total.¹ His performance was praised for balancing broad physical comedy with genuine emotional depth, making Cameron a beloved television character.

The show ran for 11 seasons (2009–2020), and Stonestreet's chemistry with Ferguson was a cornerstone of its success. He also directed one episode, "The Escape" (Season 10), showcasing his behind-the-camera skills.³

After Modern Family ended, Stonestreet continued to work in television and film. He voiced the character of Duke in the animated film The Secret Life of Pets (2016) and its 2019 sequel, and appeared in the comedy Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009). He also had a recurring role on the CBS drama NCIS: New Orleans as a quirky forensic scientist.

Beyond acting, Stonestreet is known for his philanthropy, particularly with the charity Operation Breakthrough in Kansas City, which supports children in poverty. He also co-owns a restaurant, Jack Stack Barbecue, in his hometown, reflecting his Midwestern roots.

Stonestreet is an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and has been seen at games, but he also holds a pilot's license and enjoys flying small aircraft. He is a licensed scuba diver and has traveled to remote dive sites, a hobby he rarely discusses publicly.

Before his acting career took off, he worked as a telemarketer and a bartender, and he once appeared in a local Kansas City commercial for a car dealership. He is also a trained clown, having studied at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College, though he never performed professionally. His early improv training at Second City influenced his ability to ad-lib, which he often did on Modern Family, sometimes to the delight of his co-stars.
