Elastane, also known as spandex or Lycra (a brand name), is a synthetic fiber renowned for its exceptional elasticity. Elastane is a long-chain synthetic polymer composed of at least 85% segmented polyurethane. Its molecular structure alternates hard and soft segments: the hard segments (often based on diisocyanates) provide strength and dimensional stability, while the soft segments (polyether or polyester glycols) confer extensibility. This dual-phase architecture is what allows elastane to stretch and recover like a rubber band while remaining lightweight and dyeable.
The production process typically involves reacting a macroglycol with a diisocyanate to form a prepolymer, which is then chain-extended with a diamine. The resulting polymer is spun into fibers via dry spinning, wet spinning, or reaction spinning. Dry spinning, the most common method, dissolves the polymer in a solvent (e.g., dimethylformamide) and extrudes it through spinnerets into a heated chamber where the solvent evaporates, leaving fine elastane filaments.
Elastane's defining property is its high elasticity: it can be stretched repeatedly without losing its original shape, outperforming natural rubber in resistance to oils, perspiration, and UV degradation. It is also lightweight, soft, and resistant to abrasion, though it is sensitive to heat and chlorine, which can degrade its performance over time.
In apparel, elastane is rarely used alone; it is blended with cotton, polyester, nylon, or wool to add stretch to jeans, activewear, swimwear, and undergarments. Beyond clothing, elastane is used in medical compression garments, orthopedic braces, and even in automotive upholstery. The fiber's ability to provide a snug, supportive fit has made it a staple in athleisure and shapewear, with global demand growing steadily.
Elastane was invented by chemist Joseph Shivers at DuPont in 1958, who sought a substitute for rubber in corsets and girdles. The fiber was initially marketed as Lycra and quickly gained popularity in the 1960s as fashion embraced body-conscious silhouettes. By the 1970s, elastane had expanded into sportswear and swimwear, and its use proliferated in the 1980s with the rise of aerobics and leggings.
Today, the global elastane market is valued at several billion dollars, with production concentrated in Asia—particularly China, South Korea, and Taiwan. Major producers include Invista (owner of the Lycra brand), Hyosung (Creora), and Asahi Kasei (Roica). The market faces challenges from environmental concerns, as elastane is non-biodegradable and difficult to recycle, prompting research into bio-based alternatives.
Elastane's versatility extends to niche applications: it is used in the production of disposable diapers for elastic waistbands, in the strings of tennis rackets to enhance power, and in the manufacture of high-performance bicycle tires. In the medical field, elastane is a key component in compression stockings that treat venous disorders, and it is even used in some prosthetic liners.
One surprising fact is that elastane is not a single chemical compound but a family of polymers, and its properties can be tuned by varying the ratio of hard to soft segments. Additionally, the fiber's trademark names—Lycra, Spandex, Elaspan—are often used generically, but they refer to specific brands. Environmental efforts have led to the development of elastane made from recycled materials, such as the Econyl process, though these remain a small fraction of production.
