Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus

Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus (1651–1708) was a German mathematician, physicist, philosopher, and inventor. He is best known for his work on the transformation of algebraic curves (the Tschirnhausen transformation) and for his pioneering experiments with burning glasses that laid the groundwork for the development of European porcelain.

Life and education

Born in Kieslingswalde, Silesia, Tschirnhaus studied mathematics and philosophy at the University of Leiden, where he was influenced by Cartesian thought. He traveled widely across Europe, meeting prominent scientists such as Christiaan Huygens and Isaac Newton. His early work focused on algebra and geometry, and he corresponded with Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, with whom he shared mathematical ideas. Tschirnhaus later settled in Saxony, where he devoted himself to experimental science and the development of optical instruments.

Mathematical contributions

Tschirnhaus is remembered for the Tschirnhausen transformation, a method to eliminate intermediate terms from polynomial equations, which he published in 1683. This transformation was a precursor to later work in algebraic geometry and was used by other mathematicians, including William Rowan Hamilton. He also studied caustic curves, which are the envelopes of reflected or refracted light rays, and his work on these curves influenced later research in optics and geometry.

Experiments with burning glasses and porcelain

In the 1690s, Tschirnhaus constructed large burning glasses, using them to melt refractory materials at high temperatures. His experiments with heat and minerals led him to investigate the composition of porcelain, which was then imported from China. He collaborated with Johann Friedrich Böttger, and together they developed the first European hard-paste porcelain at Meissen around 1708. Tschirnhaus died before the porcelain was officially produced, but his contributions were essential to the breakthrough.

Lesser-known aspects

Tschirnhaus also wrote on philosophy, advocating a form of empiricism that emphasized sensory experience. He invented a type of lens-grinding machine and improved the design of the camera obscura. His correspondence with Leibniz reveals a deep interest in the nature of knowledge and the possibility of a universal characteristic. Despite his achievements, Tschirnhaus's name is often overshadowed by Böttger's in the history of porcelain, and his mathematical work is less well known than that of his contemporaries.
