Echo-class submarine

The Echo class was a series of nuclear-powered cruise missile submarines built for the Soviet Navy during the Cold War. They were designed to launch anti-ship missiles against NATO carrier battle groups, and their development marked a significant shift in Soviet naval strategy toward long-range, nuclear-armed surface warfare.

Design and development

The Echo class was developed in the late 1950s as a response to the US Navy's carrier-based nuclear strike capability. The Soviet Union sought a submarine that could shadow American carrier groups and launch a devastating missile salvo if war broke out. The design was based on the November-class attack submarine hull, with an extended sail to house the missile launchers.1

Two variants were built: the Echo I (Project 659) carried four P-5 (SS-N-3c Shaddock) cruise missiles, while the improved Echo II (Project 675) carried eight launchers for the longer-range P-6 (SS-N-3a) missile. The missiles were stored in individual tubes angled upward, and the submarine had to surface to launch them, a significant tactical limitation.2

Operational history

Echo-class submarines served from the early 1960s through the end of the Cold War. They were primarily assigned to the Northern Fleet and Pacific Fleet, conducting long-range patrols in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Their main mission was to trail US carrier battle groups and, in the event of war, launch their missiles at the carriers from outside the range of the carriers' defensive weapons.

Despite their formidable armament, the Echo class had significant weaknesses. The need to surface to launch made them vulnerable to detection and attack. Additionally, the early P-5 missiles required the submarine to remain on the surface for guidance updates, further increasing risk. These limitations led to the development of later classes, such as the Charlie and Oscar classes, which could launch missiles while submerged.

Accidents and incidents

Several Echo-class submarines were involved in serious accidents. In 1968, K-129, a Soviet Golf-class submarine (not an Echo) was lost, but the Echo class had its own share of incidents. In 1970, K-8, a November-class, sank, but among the Echoes, K-56 collided with a Soviet research vessel in 1973, resulting in a fire and the deaths of 27 crew members.3 Another incident occurred in 1980 when K-122 suffered a fire in the missile compartment while on patrol, forcing the crew to surface and fight the blaze for several hours.

These accidents highlighted the inherent dangers of early nuclear submarines and the high risks associated with the volatile liquid-fueled missiles they carried. The Soviet Navy's safety record improved in later decades, but the Echo class remained a sobering reminder of the perils of Cold War naval operations.

Lesser-known aspects

One lesser-known fact is that the Echo-class design was adapted for a unique intelligence-gathering role: a single boat, K-108, was converted to test the P-500 Bazalt missile system, which later equipped the Charlie class. Additionally, some Echo IIs were fitted with the 'Kasatka' satellite targeting system, allowing them to receive target data from space-based reconnaissance, a pioneering use of satellite communications in submarine warfare.4

Another obscure detail is that the Echo class was among the first Soviet submarines to be fitted with a towed sonar array, improving their ability to detect targets at long range. However, the array was not always reliable, and crews often had to rely on less advanced systems. The class also saw service in the Soviet Navy's 'bastion' strategy, defending the Arctic approaches to the USSR.

Retirement and legacy

All Echo-class submarines were decommissioned by the early 1990s, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Many were scrapped under international disarmament agreements, with some hulls recycled for their metal. A few were retained as museum pieces or training hulks, but none survive intact today.

The Echo class's legacy lies in its role as a transitional design. It demonstrated the Soviet Union's commitment to building a powerful submarine fleet capable of challenging US naval supremacy. The lessons learned from the Echo class directly influenced the design of subsequent Soviet cruise missile submarines, which eventually achieved the ability to launch from submerged positions, making them far more survivable and effective.
