East African Rift

The East African Rift is an active continental rift system extending through eastern Africa, where the African Plate is gradually separating into the Nubian and Somali plates. Its fault zones, volcanoes, deep lakes, and broad escarpments record the early stages of continental breakup.1

Structure and extent

The East African Rift is a linked set of faults and volcanic basins produced by crustal extension. Its northern end lies in the Afar Depression, where the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and continental rifts meet in a triple-junction region; southward, the system divides into eastern and western branches.1

The Eastern Rift passes through Ethiopia and Kenya, while the Western Rift follows a chain of deep basins near the Great Lakes, including Lakes Tanganyika, Kivu, Edward, and Albert. Farther south, rifting continues through Malawi and into Mozambique, although the geometry and activity become less uniform. Rift segments are separated by accommodation zones, transfer faults, and volcanic centers rather than forming one continuous crack in the ground.

Tectonic development

The rift is opening because the Somali Plate is moving away from the Nubian Plate, with the Danakil microplate accommodating part of the complex motion in the north.1 Extension thins the lithosphere, allowing hot mantle material to rise, partially melt, and feed both volcanism and uplift.

Rifting began at different times in different sectors, generally during the Cenozoic, so the system is not a single-age structure. Northern Ethiopia and Afar preserve especially advanced stages of continental extension, where new oceanic crust may eventually develop; most of the southern rift remains continental. GPS measurements, earthquake patterns, and geological mapping show that deformation is concentrated in narrow belts, while some intervening plateaus move comparatively little.

Landscapes, volcanism, and life

Faulting and volcanic activity have created some of eastern Africa’s most distinctive landscapes. Escarpments border elevated plateaus, while subsiding basins collect water in long, narrow lakes; their great depths reflect steep fault-bounded margins and limited outlet drainage. The region includes active or recently active volcanoes such as Erta Ale, Nyiragongo, Ol Doinyo Lengai, and Mount Longonot.2

Rift lakes also preserve unusually important sedimentary archives. Layers in Lakes Turkana, Malawi, and Tanganyika record changing rainfall, vegetation, lake levels, and volcanic events. The rift’s varied environments—montane forests, alkaline lakes, grasslands, and volcanic highlands—support distinctive ecosystems and have been central to research on human evolution. Fossil-bearing sediments in the Afar and Turkana regions preserve major hominin discoveries, although the rift itself did not produce a single uniform evolutionary environment.

Lesser-known aspects

The rift contains several different kinds of volcanic and tectonic behavior rather than one standard model. In Afar, shallow magma intrusions can accommodate extension through swarms of earthquakes and fissures; in the Western Rift, deep lakes and large border faults dominate the surface expression. Carbon dioxide released from volcanic and tectonic sources can accumulate in closed, stratified lakes, creating rare but serious hazards.

Some of the system’s most consequential risks are local and episodic. Nyiragongo’s unusually fluid lava has threatened Goma, while Lake Kivu stores large quantities of dissolved carbon dioxide and methane beneath its deep waters, making limnic-eruption risk a subject of scientific monitoring.3 The rift also matters for geothermal energy: Kenya and Ethiopia exploit heat associated with shallow magma and high regional heat flow, while Ethiopia’s Afar region provides a natural laboratory for observing continental breakup in progress.4
