History and Formation

EPCglobal was formed in 2003 as a joint venture between the Uniform Code Council (now GS1 US) and the European Article Numbering Association (now GS1), consolidating efforts to commercialize the Electronic Product Code, which had been developed at the Auto-ID Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.1 The Auto-ID Center, founded in 1999, was a research consortium funded by major companies and academic institutions, and it developed the foundational concepts of the EPC network, including the EPC data format and the use of RFID tags.2 EPCglobal took over the stewardship of these standards, aiming to create a global, open standard for identifying items in the supply chain.
