Dreamville Records

Dreamville Records was founded in 2007 by J. Cole and Ibrahim Hamad, who met while both were students at St. John's University. The label's name derives from the fictional town of Dreamville, a concept that J. Cole has used throughout his career to represent his creative vision and community.¹ Initially operating as an independent label, Dreamville gained prominence after J. Cole signed with Roc Nation in 2009, but he retained ownership of Dreamville as his own imprint.²

The label's roster has included artists such as Bas, Cozz, Omen, Lute, Ari Lennox, and EarthGang, among others. Dreamville has released a series of compilation albums titled Revenge of the Dreamers, with the third installment in 2019 featuring contributions from over 100 artists and producers, and debuting at number one on the Billboard 200.³ The label has also released J. Cole's albums, including 2014 Forest Hills Drive and KOD, both of which achieved multi-platinum status.⁴

Dreamville operates as an independent label with distribution deals through major partners. In 2020, Dreamville signed a distribution deal with Interscope Records, while retaining creative control. The label has been noted for its artist-friendly approach, often allowing artists to retain ownership of their masters and creative freedom.

Dreamville has cultivated a strong fanbase and community, often referred to as the "Dreamville family." The label's annual Dreamville Festival, held in Raleigh, North Carolina, has become a major event, drawing tens of thousands of attendees. The label is also known for its collaborative spirit, as exemplified by the recording sessions for Revenge of the Dreamers III, which were documented in the film Dreamville Presents: REVENGE.⁵

Beyond its mainstream success, Dreamville has been involved in philanthropic efforts, such as the Dreamville Foundation, which supports youth and community development in J. Cole's hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina.⁶ The label has also been a platform for emerging producers, with its annual Dreamville Producer Challenge offering opportunities for unknown beatmakers to work with the label's artists. Additionally, the label's roster has included international artists, such as Nigerian singer Simi, who was featured on the Revenge of the Dreamers III track "Still Up."⁷
