Doñana National Park is a national park and protected wetland in Andalusia, Spain, occupying the lower Guadalquivir basin where marshes, shifting dunes, Mediterranean scrub, lagoons, and Atlantic beaches form one of Europe’s most important ecosystems for migratory birds and threatened wildlife.1
Doñana’s defining feature is the sharp transition between wetlands, dunes, coastal sands, and dry Mediterranean habitats. The park lies beside the Atlantic at the Guadalquivir estuary, and its seasonal marshes expand and contract according to rainfall, river inflow, groundwater, and human water use.1 The marisma, or marsh, is especially significant: shallow temporary waters provide feeding and nesting grounds for large numbers of waterfowl, while the mobile dunes support specialized plants and sheltered hollows known as corrales. Pinewoods, juniper stands, heathlands, and scrub create additional habitat for mammals and reptiles. This mosaic, rather than any single landscape type, explains Doñana’s exceptional biological value and its recognition as both a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site.2
Doñana is a major meeting point for European and African wildlife. Its wetlands lie along the East Atlantic Flyway, supporting flamingos, spoonbills, herons, storks, ducks, and waders during migration and winter, while resident species use the marshes for breeding.1 The park also protects emblematic Iberian fauna, including the Iberian lynx and Spanish imperial eagle, alongside red deer, fallow deer, wild boar, badgers, and the endangered Spanish pond turtle. Conditions can change dramatically between a wet year, when the marshes become a broad network of shallow lagoons, and a dry year, when only permanent water bodies remain. Research at the Doñana Biological Station has made the region an important long-term field laboratory for ecology, conservation biology, and climate studies.3
Doñana became a national park in 1969 after scientists and conservation organizations helped secure protection for its wetlands and surrounding habitats.2 Its protected status later expanded through adjoining reserves and international designations, including Ramsar wetland recognition and UNESCO World Heritage listing in 1994.1 Conservation is complicated because the park is embedded in a working region. Irrigated agriculture, tourism, roads, settlements, groundwater extraction, altered water flows, and prolonged drought can reduce the duration and extent of seasonal flooding. The 1998 Aznalcóllar mine-waste disaster, outside the park but connected to its wider watershed, demonstrated how industrial pollution can threaten the estuary and marsh system. Management therefore depends on coordination beyond the park boundary, especially across the Guadalquivir basin.
Doñana is not a single uniform wetland but a layered landscape shaped by wind, tides, freshwater, and shifting groundwater. Some dune ridges migrate gradually across the coast, while interdunal depressions can retain moisture and support vegetation unlike that on the surrounding sands. The marsh is also culturally distinctive: traditional seasonal cattle grazing, horse use, fishing, and the annual pilgrimage to El Rocío have long influenced the region, although modern conservation regulates access and land use.2 Another overlooked feature is the park’s value as a natural observatory. Long-running records of birds, plants, hydrology, and large mammals allow researchers to detect changes in migration, disease, drought, and habitat quality. Doñana’s future is consequently tied not only to species protection but also to restoring ecological water regimes across its wider catchment.
