Digital art is a broad term for artistic works that use digital technology as an essential part of the creative or presentation process. It encompasses a wide range of media, from computer-generated images and animations to interactive installations and virtual reality experiences, and has become a dominant force in contemporary art since the late 20th century.
The origins of digital art trace back to the 1950s and 1960s, when engineers and scientists began using computers to create visual imagery. One of the earliest works is 'Electronic Abstractions' by Ben Laposky (1950), who used an oscilloscope to generate abstract patterns. In 1963, Ivan Sutherland's Sketchpad introduced interactive computer graphics, allowing users to draw directly on a screen. The first exhibitions of computer art took place in 1965, with shows by Frieder Nake and Georg Nees in Stuttgart and by A. Michael Noll at the Howard Wise Gallery in New York.1 These pioneers were often mathematicians or engineers, and their work was initially met with skepticism from the traditional art world.
The development of personal computers and graphics software in the 1980s and 1990s democratized digital art, enabling artists to work without access to expensive mainframe computers. The introduction of Adobe Photoshop (1990) and other tools allowed for digital painting and photo manipulation. The rise of the internet in the 1990s facilitated the distribution of digital art and gave birth to net art, a genre that uses the web as its medium. By the early 2000s, digital art had gained recognition in major museums, with institutions like the Whitney Museum and the Tate acquiring digital works. The 2010s saw the emergence of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) as new artistic platforms, and in 2021, the sale of Beeple's 'Everydays: The First 5000 Days' for $69 million at Christie's marked a watershed moment for digital art and NFTs.2
Digital art encompasses a diverse array of forms, including digital painting, 3D modeling, generative art, algorithmic art, fractal art, pixel art, and digital collage. Generative art, in which artists write code that produces images or animations, has roots in the 1960s and gained prominence with the work of artists like Manfred Mohr and Vera Molnár. Algorithmic art relies on mathematical formulas to create complex patterns, while fractal art uses recursive geometry to generate intricate, self-similar designs. Pixel art, which emerged from early video games, has become a nostalgic and stylized genre. Digital artists also employ techniques such as photomanipulation, vector graphics, and interactive installations that respond to viewer input. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in art, such as generative adversarial networks (GANs), has expanded the boundaries of creativity, raising questions about authorship and originality.3
Digital art has challenged traditional notions of originality, reproduction, and ownership. Unlike physical artworks, digital files can be infinitely copied and altered, leading to debates about the value of digital works. The advent of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) has attempted to solve this by providing a certificate of authenticity on a blockchain, but it has also sparked concerns about environmental impact and market speculation. Digital art has also democratized art creation, allowing anyone with a computer and software to produce and share work globally. It has influenced other fields, including advertising, film, and video games, and has become a tool for social and political commentary. Museums and galleries have adapted by creating digital exhibitions and online collections, making art more accessible to a wider audience.4
Beyond the well-known milestones, digital art has a rich history of obscure and surprising developments. For instance, the first computer art was created using a plotter, a device that draws lines on paper, and early works were often mistaken for traditional drawings. The term 'digital art' itself was not widely used until the 1980s; before that, it was called 'computer art' or 'multimedia art.' Notable but lesser-known figures include Lillian Schwartz, who used computers to analyze and create art at Bell Labs in the 1960s, and Harold Cohen, who developed AARON, an AI program that creates original drawings. The 'demoscene' subculture, which emerged in the 1980s, involves creating real-time graphics and music on early home computers, and it has influenced modern game design and digital aesthetics. Additionally, the use of digital art in scientific visualization has helped researchers communicate complex data, from molecular structures to climate models.5
