David Morales (politician)

David Morales was born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, in a working-class family. He attended public schools in the city and later graduated from Brown University, where he studied public policy and became involved in student activism. Before entering electoral politics, Morales worked as a community organizer with the Rhode Island Working Families Party and other local groups, focusing on issues such as affordable housing, tenants' rights, and wage theft. His organizing background shaped his legislative priorities and his commitment to grassroots, participatory politics.

Morales first ran for the Rhode Island House of Representatives in 2018, challenging a long-incumbent Democrat in the primary. He won the primary and subsequently the general election, becoming one of the youngest members of the General Assembly at the time. In office, he has championed legislation to strengthen renters' protections, including a bill to require just cause for eviction, and has advocated for a state-level Green New Deal. He has also been a vocal critic of corporate influence in politics, supporting campaign finance reform and public financing of elections. Morales has served on committees related to health and human services and municipal government.

Morales is a self-described democratic socialist and has aligned with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. He has co-sponsored bills to establish a single-payer healthcare system in Rhode Island, to raise the minimum wage to $15, and to create a state bank. He has also worked on criminal justice reform, including measures to end cash bail for low-level offenses. Outside the legislature, Morales has been active in mutual aid efforts, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping to organize food distribution and rental assistance networks in his district.

Beyond his legislative work, Morales has been involved in efforts to democratize the Democratic Party's internal structures, advocating for open primaries and ranked-choice voting. He has also been a proponent of participatory budgeting, allowing residents to directly decide how to allocate a portion of district funds. Morales has faced criticism from more moderate Democrats for his confrontational style and his support for primary challenges against incumbents. In 2020, he was one of the first Rhode Island legislators to endorse Bernie Sanders for president. He has also been a vocal supporter of the movement to divest state pension funds from fossil fuels.
