Darksaber

The Darksaber was forged by Tarre Vizsla, a Mandalorian who became a Jedi Knight, sometime before the fall of the Old Republic. It is the only known lightsaber with a black blade, a result of a unique kyber crystal that produces a dark, blade-like energy. After Vizsla's death, the saber remained in the Jedi Temple for centuries, but members of House Vizsla stole it during a period of conflict, establishing it as an heirloom of Mandalorian leadership.¹

Among Mandalorians, the Darksaber is not merely a weapon but a symbol of authority, often referred to as the symbol of leadership of all Mandalorians. Possession of the blade traditionally grants the right to rule, but only if won in combat, a rule that has led to numerous conflicts and power struggles. The saber's unique appearance and history have made it a coveted artifact, with its ownership often contested by rival factions.²

Throughout its history, the Darksaber has been wielded by several key figures. Pre Vizsla, leader of Death Watch, used it during the Clone Wars, but lost it to Darth Maul after a duel. Maul's rule over Mandalore was brief, and the saber later came into the hands of Sabine Wren, who passed it to Bo-Katan Kryze. After the Great Purge, the saber was acquired by Moff Gideon, and eventually by Din Djarin, who struggled with the responsibility of leadership it represented.³

Beyond its on-screen appearances, the Darksaber has a rich lore in expanded media. In the non-canon Star Wars Legends continuity, it was created by a Mandalorian Jedi named Darth Vectivus, and it was central to the novel Darksaber (1995) by Kevin J. Anderson, where it was part of a plot to build a superweapon. The saber's design was inspired by a concept by artist Joe Johnston, and its sound effects were created by combining a lightsaber hum with a low-frequency buzz. In canon, the Darksaber's blade is also notable for its ability to cut through most materials, including beskar, though with difficulty.⁴
