The Commodore 128 was a 1985 home computer by Commodore International, designed to extend the company’s successful Commodore 64 with more memory, improved built-in software, a professional 80-column display mode, and compatibility with CP/M as well as Commodore software.1 It became one of the most capable 8-bit computers of its period, although its higher price and late arrival limited its commercial impact.
The Commodore 128 was conceived as a broader successor to the Commodore 64 rather than as a wholly separate platform. Commodore International introduced it in 1985, when the C64 already had a large software library and established user community.1 Its designers retained substantial C64 compatibility while adding features aimed at schools, hobbyists, and office users.
The machine used a full-size case and keyboard, including a numeric keypad and dedicated cursor keys. It supplied 128 kilobytes of RAM, expandable through bank switching, and included a built-in machine-language monitor and a more capable version of Commodore BASIC. The design therefore addressed both the familiarity of the C64 and complaints about its limited keyboard and weak built-in programming environment.
The computer’s defining technical feature was its combination of multiple processors and display systems. A MOS 8502 handled normal C128 operation, while a Zilog Z80A enabled CP/M software; the system could also operate in a C64-compatible mode using the VIC-IIe video architecture.34
Its 40-column mode resembled the C64, but the separate VDC chip supported an 80-column text display that was sharper and more suitable for word processing and database work. The VDC normally required a separate RGBI-compatible monitor, so the 80-column feature was not simply an enhanced version of the television-oriented C64 display. Switching between modes also imposed practical limits: software written for one environment could not automatically use every feature of the others.
The Commodore 128’s software advantage came from its ability to run three distinct families of programs. Native C128 software could use the extra memory, 80-column display, and BASIC 7.0, while C64 mode provided access to a much larger existing library.1 CP/M added compatibility with applications written for the widely used operating system, including business and programming tools, although disk format, speed, and hardware compatibility varied among programs.
Common uses included home programming, games, word processing, spreadsheets, bulletin-board operation, and classroom computing. The machine’s two serial-device buses, cartridge connector, joystick ports, and support for Commodore disk drives preserved the company’s peripheral ecosystem. Later software also exploited its extra memory and enhanced graphics, but the platform never accumulated a library as large as the C64’s.
The C128 was unusually adaptable for an 8-bit home computer, but that flexibility created visible compromises. Its processors did not function as a general-purpose multiprocessor team: the 8502 and Z80 served different operating environments, and software normally selected one mode rather than freely combining both.1
The VDC’s memory was separate from the main system RAM, and early machines commonly shipped with only 16 kilobytes of VDC memory; later expansion to 64 kilobytes improved high-resolution applications. The computer also supported a rarely used “fast” serial mode with compatible disk drives, reducing a long-standing Commodore disk-I/O bottleneck. Its backward compatibility made it valuable to existing C64 owners, while its late-1980s arrival coincided with the growing shift toward 16-bit systems and IBM PC compatibles.
The Commodore 128’s advertised 128 KB referred to main system RAM; video memory, ROM, and optional expansions were separate resources.
