Combined arms is the coordinated employment of different military capabilities so that each offsets the vulnerabilities of the others and together produces an effect greater than separate attacks. In land warfare, infantry, armor, artillery, engineers, air defense, aviation, intelligence, and electronic warfare may be synchronized within one operation rather than committed sequentially or independently.1
Combined arms creates complementary effects by integrating distinct combat functions against a common objective. Infantry can seize and hold ground, armored vehicles can provide protected mobility and direct fire, artillery can suppress or destroy targets beyond line of sight, and engineers can breach obstacles; their combination is intended to make the enemy’s response more difficult than any single arm would allow.
The idea is broader than simply placing different units in the same formation. A combined-arms plan assigns tasks, timings, boundaries, communications, and priorities so that one action opens an opportunity for another. Suppression may permit a maneuver force to advance, an armored threat may compel an enemy to expose antitank positions, and engineers may alter terrain so that infantry and vehicles can move. The desired result is usually a dilemma: every available enemy response carries a serious cost.
Modern combined arms developed from the increasing lethality and range of industrial-era weapons. Trench warfare in the First World War demonstrated that infantry attacks unsupported by artillery, tanks, or careful coordination were vulnerable to machine guns, wire, and defensive fire. Later experiments combined tanks, motorized infantry, artillery, engineers, and aircraft into more mobile formations, while radio communications made rapid coordination more practical.
During the Second World War, armored and mechanized formations refined the integration of movement, firepower, and logistics, although their methods differed by army and theater. Postwar forces extended the concept to include helicopters, precision fires, air defense, surveillance, and increasingly digital command networks. The doctrinal vocabulary varies: the United States emphasizes combined-arms maneuver within multidomain operations, while other armed forces use related terms for all-arms or joint integration.
Combined arms is implemented through task organization, rehearsals, and control of supporting effects. A commander may attach tanks to an infantry formation, place engineers under a maneuver headquarters, or allocate artillery and unmanned surveillance to support a specific phase. Fire-support coordination, intelligence collection, airspace control, and logistics connect the separate units and reduce the risk that one element outruns its support.
At the tactical level, a combined-arms breach might use reconnaissance to identify an obstacle, artillery and smoke to suppress observation, engineers to clear lanes, armored vehicles to protect the breach, and infantry to eliminate surviving positions. At operational level, the same logic can link ground maneuver with air power, maritime fires, cyber operations, and space-based communications. Such integration depends on reliable command-and-control, common procedures, accurate identification of friendly forces, and the ability to continue operating when communications are disrupted.
Combined arms does not require every arm to attack simultaneously, and it is not synonymous with joint warfare. Its defining feature is functional interdependence: a formation may employ capabilities at different times or in different places while still coordinating their effects. Nor does technology automatically create combined arms; poorly integrated sensors, fires, and maneuver can increase friction, delays, and the danger of friendly fire.
Terrain and scale strongly shape the method. Dense cities, forests, mountains, and wetlands may restrict armored movement and make engineers, infantry, reconnaissance, and precision fires unusually important. Small formations can practice combined arms through infantry–armor teams, whereas larger headquarters coordinate fires and sustainment across extended distances. Electronic warfare and unmanned systems have also made concealment, electromagnetic discipline, and rapid target verification central concerns. The concept therefore remains less a fixed order of battle than a problem-solving framework for matching complementary capabilities to a specific enemy and environment.
Combined arms is distinct from the broader coordination of separate military services, commonly called joint warfare, although combined-arms formations may operate within joint campaigns.
