Plot

Gautam (Saif Ali Khan) is a charming, commitment-phobic young man living in London who works as a bartender. He meets Veronica (Deepika Padukone), a vivacious and independent woman, and they begin a casual, no-strings-attached relationship. When Veronica's conservative Indian roommate Meera (Diana Penty) arrives, she and Gautam initially clash but gradually develop a deep friendship. Complications arise when Gautam and Meera fall in love, leading to a love triangle that tests their loyalties and forces each to confront their own fears about love and commitment.1

The film explores themes of modern relationships, cultural identity, and the complexities of friendship versus romance. The narrative culminates in a series of confrontations and reconciliations, ultimately affirming the importance of honesty and emotional vulnerability in love.2

2

Cast and characters

The film features a small but impactful cast. Saif Ali Khan plays Gautam, a role that earned him praise for his comedic timing and charm. Deepika Padukone portrays Veronica, a character that broke away from her earlier 'sweet girl' image, showcasing her versatility. Diana Penty, in her debut, plays Meera, a traditional yet modern woman, and was lauded for her natural screen presence.

Randeep Hooda appears in a cameo as Kunal, Meera's ex-boyfriend, and Dimple Kapadia plays Gautam's mother, Kavita, adding depth to the family dynamics. The chemistry among the lead trio was widely appreciated, and the film is often cited as a turning point in Padukone's career.

Production and release

Directed by Homi Adajania, known for his debut Being Cyrus, Cocktail was produced by Saif Ali Khan's Illuminati Films. The film was shot extensively in London, with some sequences in Cape Town, South Africa. The soundtrack, composed by Pritam, became a chartbuster, with songs like 'Second Hand Jawaani' and 'Tumhi Ho Bandhu' receiving massive popularity.3

Released on 13 July 2012, the film opened to positive reviews from critics, who praised the performances and the fresh take on urban relationships. It was a commercial success, grossing over ₹1.15 billion worldwide, and was declared a 'hit' by Box Office India.4

4

Critical reception

Critics generally praised the film for its engaging narrative and strong performances. Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN called it "a breezy, fun film that works because of its leads," while Anupama Chopra noted that the film "celebrates the messiness of modern love."5 However, some critics felt the second half dragged and the plot was predictable.

The film's portrayal of non-traditional relationships and its frank discussion of sex and commitment were seen as progressive for mainstream Bollywood at the time. Deepika Padukone's performance, in particular, was singled out as a career-best, earning her several award nominations.

5

Lesser-known aspects

One lesser-known fact is that the film's title was initially 'Cocktail' but was almost changed to 'Love Aaj Kal 2' due to marketing concerns, though the team retained the original. The character of Veronica was originally written as a British-Indian, but Padukone's portrayal added layers of vulnerability that were not in the script.3

The film's soundtrack, composed by Pritam, featured the song 'Yaariyan' which was not in the final cut but was released as a bonus track. Additionally, the film's climax was reshot after test screenings, as the original ending was deemed too dark. The film also marked the debut of Diana Penty, who was a model before entering films, and she was initially hesitant to take on the role due to its bold content.
