Overview and architecture

The Cisco ASR series spans multiple platforms, from the compact ASR 1000 to the modular ASR 9000 and the high-end ASR 9900. The ASR 1000, introduced in 2008, was the first to use a centralized forwarding processor (the QuantumFlow Processor) that enabled flexible service integration without dedicated line cards.1 The ASR 9000, also known as the ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router, targets Ethernet aggregation and mobile backhaul, supporting up to 100 Gbps per slot in later models.2 All ASR platforms run Cisco IOS XR or IOS XE, providing modular software design and in-service software upgrades.

Deployments and use cases

ASR routers are widely deployed in service provider networks for broadband aggregation, IP/MPLS core, and mobile backhaul. They also appear in enterprise WAN edge and data center interconnect roles. The ASR 1000 is often used as a branch or headend router with integrated firewall, VPN, and application visibility.3 The ASR 9000 series supports Carrier Ethernet services, including E-LINE and E-LAN, and is a common choice for cable and telecom operators upgrading to 100G.

Lesser-known aspects

Beyond the mainstream models, the ASR family includes the ASR 5000, a packet core platform for 3G/4G/5G networks, and the ASR 5500, which evolved into the virtualized packet core. The ASR 9000's line cards use a network processor that can be programmed for custom forwarding, and the system supports segment routing and EVPN.4 A niche fact: the ASR 1000's QuantumFlow Processor was originally developed by Cisco's startup acquisition of a company called TippingPoint? Actually, it was developed in-house, but the architecture was inspired by network processors from the mid-2000s. The ASR 9000 also supports a 'full mesh' of fabric connections, enabling hitless failover.

Legacy and evolution

The ASR series succeeded the Cisco 10000 and 12000 series routers, and it has been gradually complemented by the Network Convergence System (NCS) family. Many ASR 9000 models remain in production, but Cisco now emphasizes the NCS 5500 and 6000 for new core deployments.5 The ASR 1000 continues to receive software updates, with support for new interface speeds and security features. The ASR 5000, originally from the Starent Networks acquisition, is now part of the Ultra Packet Core, but the ASR name persists in documentation.
