Cichlids are a family of freshwater fish, Cichlidae, known for their extraordinary species diversity, complex behaviors, and rapid evolutionary radiations, particularly in the East African Great Lakes.
Cichlids are among the most species-rich families of vertebrates, with over 1,700 described species and an estimated total exceeding 2,000. They are native to tropical and subtropical freshwaters of Africa, Central and South America, and parts of Asia, with the greatest diversity in the African Great Lakes: Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Victoria. These lakes host hundreds of endemic species each, many of which evolved within the last few hundred thousand years—one of the fastest known vertebrate radiations. Cichlids occupy nearly every freshwater niche, from open-water plankton feeders to rocky-shore algae scrapers and deep-water predators. Their adaptability is reflected in a wide range of body shapes, sizes (from 2.5 cm to nearly 1 m), and coloration patterns.
Cichlid radiations are a model system for studying speciation and adaptive radiation. In Lake Victoria, over 500 species evolved from a single ancestral lineage in less than 15,000 years, a record for vertebrate diversification. The cichlid genome has been sequenced for several species, revealing that gene duplication and regulatory changes underpin their morphological and behavioral diversity. Sexual selection, particularly female choice based on male coloration, drives reproductive isolation and rapid speciation. Hybridization between species has also played a role, transferring adaptive traits across lineages. These evolutionary dynamics make cichlids a key subject in evolutionary biology, with implications for understanding biodiversity and conservation.
Cichlids exhibit complex behaviors, including parental care, territoriality, and elaborate courtship. Most species are substrate or mouthbrooders; mouthbrooding females carry eggs and fry in their mouths for protection. Some species, like the convict cichlid, form monogamous pairs and defend their young aggressively. Cichlids use visual and chemical signals for communication, and many have specialized feeding mechanisms, such as pharyngeal jaws that allow efficient processing of prey. In aquaria, they are popular for their intelligence and interactive behavior, but their ecological roles in the wild are equally important: they control algae growth, serve as prey for larger fish, and contribute to nutrient cycling in their habitats.
Beyond the famous lake radiations, cichlids include lesser-known species like the blind cave cichlid of Mexico, which has lost its eyes and pigmentation. The West African cichlid Steatocranus species are adapted to fast-flowing rivers, with reduced swim bladders for benthic living. Some cichlids, such as the angelfish and discus, are major aquarium trade species, but others like the Texas cichlid are invasive in Florida. The genus Etroplus in India and Sri Lanka represents a relict lineage, showing cichlids' ancient Gondwanan distribution. Fossil cichlids from the Eocene of Tanzania date back 46 million years, providing evidence of their early diversification. Conservation challenges include overfishing, pollution, and the introduction of Nile perch in Lake Victoria, which caused a cascade of extinctions.
