Chronicles of Ancient Darkness

The series begins with Wolf Brother (2004), where Torak, orphaned after his father is killed by a demon bear, must journey to the Mountain of the World Spirit to defeat the bear and restore balance. Each subsequent book—Spirit Walker, Soul Eater, Outcast, Oath Breaker, and Ghost Hunter—follows Torak and his allies, including the girl Renn and the wolf Wolf, as they face new threats from the Soul Eaters, a group of power-hungry mages. The setting is a fictionalized version of the Scandinavian peninsula during the Neolithic era, with clans named after animals (Raven, Wolf, Seal) and a landscape of forests, rivers, and glaciers.

Paver conducted extensive research, consulting archaeologists and anthropologists to ensure accuracy in details such as tool-making, hunting techniques, and spiritual beliefs. She spent time in the wilderness to observe wolf behavior and even learned to make fire with flint. The books include a note on the research and a glossary of terms. The wolf's perspective is rendered through a unique narrative voice that reflects canine perception, a technique praised by critics for its originality.

The series has been translated into over 40 languages and has sold millions of copies worldwide. It won the 2005 Guardian Children's Fiction Prize for Wolf Brother and was shortlisted for several other awards. In 2010, a film adaptation of Wolf Brother was announced, but it has not been produced. The books have been adapted into a stage play and an audio series narrated by actor Ian McKellen.

Paver originally conceived the series as a trilogy but expanded it to six books due to reader demand. The companion book The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness: The Official Companion (2009) includes maps, character sketches, and behind-the-scenes material. A lesser-known fact is that the character of Wolf is based on a real wolf named Wolf, whom Paver observed in a wildlife park. The series also explores themes of environmentalism and the consequences of human greed, which are subtly woven into the plot.
