The Entertainment Technology Center, a joint initiative of the School of Computer Science and College of Fine Arts, was created to combine technical development with storytelling, design, and interactive media.2 The university also helped establish software engineering as a recognizable academic and professional field through research, curriculum development, and the Software Engineering Institute.
Its history includes an unusual connection to industrial research: the Mellon Institute pioneered a system in which companies sponsored research fellowships, a model that influenced later university-industry partnerships. Carnegie Mellon has also been associated with early work in computer music, machine learning, speech and language technologies, and autonomous navigation.
