The Carnegie Institution was established in 1902 with a $10 million gift from Andrew Carnegie, later increased to $22 million, making it one of the largest philanthropic scientific ventures of its time.1 Its first president, Daniel Coit Gilman, shaped its mission to support fundamental research rather than applied science. Early departments included the Mount Wilson Observatory, the Geophysical Laboratory, and the Department of Genetics, each targeting frontier questions in astronomy, geophysics, and heredity.2 The institution's model of funding individual investigators, rather than large teams, was innovative and influenced later research organizations.

Major scientific contributions

Carnegie scientists have produced landmark discoveries across disciplines. At Mount Wilson, Edwin Hubble's observations led to the conclusion that the universe is expanding, a cornerstone of modern cosmology. In 1951, Barbara McClintock, working at the Department of Genetics, discovered transposable elements in maize, earning her the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1983.3 The institution also played a role in early DNA research: Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase's 1952 experiment, conducted at the Department of Genetics, confirmed DNA as the genetic material. Current structure and research

Today, the Carnegie Institution operates six research departments: the Observatories (in Pasadena, California, and Las Campanas, Chile), the Geophysical Laboratory, the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism, the Department of Plant Biology, the Department of Embryology, and the Department of Global Ecology.4 Each department maintains a small, focused faculty of principal investigators who pursue independent, high-risk research. Beyond its famous discoveries, the Carnegie Institution has a rich history of lesser-known contributions. Its Geophysical Laboratory pioneered experimental petrology, using high-pressure apparatus to simulate Earth's mantle conditions, which informed plate tectonics theory. The institution also operated a marine biology laboratory at Tortugas, Florida, from 1904 to 1939, which was a hub for tropical marine research. In the 1930s, the Department of Genetics conducted controversial eugenics research, a chapter the institution has publicly acknowledged and condemned.
