Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778) was a Swedish botanist, zoologist, and physician who formalised binomial nomenclature, the modern system of naming organisms. His work laid the foundations for the modern scheme of taxonomy and is considered one of the fathers of modern ecology.
Carl Linnaeus was born on 23 May 1707 in Råshult, Sweden, to a Lutheran pastor and a mother from a family of priests. His father, Nils Linnaeus, introduced him to botany at an early age, and by his teens Linnaeus had developed a deep interest in plants. He studied medicine at Lund University and then at Uppsala University, where his botanical talents caught the attention of professor Olof Rudbeck the Younger. In 1732, the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala funded an expedition to Lapland, during which Linnaeus documented the region's flora, fauna, and Sami culture. This journey produced the Flora Lapponica (1737) and solidified his reputation as a naturalist.1
Linnaeus's lasting contribution is the system of binomial nomenclature, in which each species is given a two-part Latin name: the genus and the specific epithet. He first applied this consistently in Species Plantarum (1753), which listed every known plant species at the time. For animals, the 10th edition of Systema Naturae (1758) is the official starting point of zoological nomenclature. This system replaced unwieldy polynomial descriptions and provided a stable, universal method for naming organisms. Linnaeus also introduced a hierarchical classification system (kingdom, class, order, genus, species) that remains the backbone of taxonomy.2
First published in 1735, Systema Naturae went through multiple editions, growing from a slim pamphlet to a multi-volume work. In it, Linnaeus classified all known organisms into a nested hierarchy, and he famously placed humans in the order Primates alongside monkeys and apes. This classification was controversial in its time but was later accepted. The 10th edition (1758) is particularly significant because it is the baseline for zoological nomenclature, and many of the names he coined are still in use, such as Homo sapiens for humans. Linnaeus's work also influenced other fields, including mineralogy and medicine, as he applied his classification system to minerals and diseases.3
In 1741, Linnaeus was appointed professor of medicine and botany at Uppsala University, where he revitalized the botanical garden and trained a generation of students. He sent many of his disciples, known as the "apostles," on voyages to collect specimens from around the world, which expanded European knowledge of global biodiversity. Linnaeus was ennobled in 1761, taking the name Carl von Linné. He continued to work until his death in 1778. His legacy includes not only the naming system but also the concept of a fixed species, which later influenced evolutionary thought, though he initially believed species were immutable. His collections and manuscripts are now held by the Linnean Society of London.4
Beyond his taxonomic work, Linnaeus had several lesser-known interests. He was an early proponent of the idea that humans are closely related to primates, which was radical for his time. He also devised a system for classifying diseases based on symptoms, which was used for decades. Linnaeus was deeply interested in the practical uses of plants, and he wrote on topics such as the cultivation of pearls and the potential of using lichens for dyes. He also had a quirky side: he kept a "flower clock" in his garden, planting species that opened and closed at specific times of day. Additionally, Linnaeus was one of the first to describe the phenomenon of migration in birds, and he speculated on the possibility of a land bridge connecting continents to explain species distributions.
