Cardano was launched in September 2017 by Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK), a blockchain engineering company founded by Charles Hoskinson and Jeremy Wood. The project was named after Gerolamo Cardano, an Italian Renaissance polymath, and its token ADA honors Ada Lovelace. Development is overseen by three organizations: IOHK, the Cardano Foundation (based in Zug, Switzerland), and Emurgo, a commercial partner. The platform's roadmap is divided into five eras: Byron (foundation), Shelley (decentralization), Goguen (smart contracts), Basho (scalability), and Voltaire (governance). The Shelley era, completed in 2020, transitioned the network from a federated to a fully decentralized system.
