Origins and purpose

Canonical was created in 2004 by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth to support the development and distribution of Ubuntu.1 Ubuntu was built on Debian and sought to make a free Linux system easier to install, update, and use across personal computers and servers. Canonical remains a privately held company headquartered in London, with a globally distributed workforce and contributors.

The company’s business model rests on open-source software paired with commercial services. Canonical develops much of the software publicly, while organizations can purchase technical support, security maintenance, consulting, managed services, and certification. Ubuntu is Canonical’s central product and the foundation for its wider portfolio. Certified devices and cloud images are tested against particular Ubuntu releases so that customers can obtain defined combinations of kernels, drivers, firmware, and support.6

Ubuntu’s release system is deliberately segmented. Interim releases arrive every six months, whereas Long Term Support releases are issued every two years and receive several years of security maintenance; Ubuntu Pro can extend coverage for selected packages beyond the ordinary period.2 Canonical has also promoted real-time Ubuntu for latency-sensitive industrial, telecommunications, and robotics workloads, illustrating how the company adapts a general-purpose distribution to specialized operational requirements.

Major public clouds offer Ubuntu images, and Ubuntu is a common base for containerized workloads and developer environments.7
