Canelo Álvarez

Álvarez was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, the youngest of eight children. His family moved to Juanacatlán, where he began boxing at age 13 after watching his older brother Rigoberto train. He compiled a reported amateur record of 44–2 before turning professional at 15, fighting in small venues across Mexico. His early career was marked by rapid development; he won his first 30 fights before facing his first notable test against Miguel Cotto in 2015, a fight he lost by unanimous decision. That loss, however, proved a turning point, as Álvarez refined his defensive skills and adjusted his training regimen under coach Eddy Reynoso.

Álvarez captured his first world title in 2011 by defeating Matthew Hatton for the vacant WBC super welterweight belt. He subsequently unified titles in the middleweight division, engaging in a storied rivalry with Gennady Golovkin. Their 2017 draw and 2018 majority decision win for Álvarez were among the most anticipated fights of the decade. In 2019, Álvarez moved up to light heavyweight to knock out Sergey Kovalev, becoming a four-division champion. His crowning achievement came in 2021 when he defeated Caleb Plant to become the undisputed super middleweight champion, holding all four major belts simultaneously.

Álvarez is known for his pressure fighting, precise counterpunching, and devastating body shots. His ability to cut off the ring and slip punches has made him a difficult target for opponents. Trained by Eddy Reynoso, Álvarez emphasizes head movement and footwork, often switching between orthodox and southpaw stances. His legacy extends beyond titles; he has headlined major pay-per-view events, including a 2022 trilogy fight with Golovkin that drew over one million buys. Álvarez has also been recognized as Fighter of the Year by The Ring magazine multiple times, cementing his status as a modern great.

Beyond the ring, Álvarez has a passion for golf and has participated in celebrity tournaments. He is also a licensed pilot and owns a private jet. In 2020, he filed a lawsuit against streaming service DAZN and promoter Golden Boy Promotions, seeking to void his contract; the case was settled, allowing him to become a free agent. Álvarez has a history of charitable work in his hometown, including funding a boxing gym for underprivileged youth. He also holds the distinction of being the first Mexican boxer to become undisputed champion at super middleweight, a feat he accomplished in 2021.
