Buzz Aldrin is an American astronaut and second person to walk on the Moon. A former fighter pilot and aerospace engineer, he served as lunar-module pilot on Apollo 11, helped demonstrate techniques for space rendezvous, and later advocated human exploration of Mars.
Buzz Aldrin’s path to the Moon began with military aviation, engineering, and orbital-flight research. Born Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr. in Montclair, New Jersey, on January 20, 1930, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1951 and became a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force. During the Korean War, he flew combat missions in F-86 Sabres before serving in other Air Force assignments. He earned a doctorate in astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1963; his dissertation examined guidance for piloted orbital rendezvous, a problem central to later lunar missions. NASA selected him as an astronaut in 1963, in the third astronaut group.
Aldrin established his spaceflight reputation on Gemini 12 and then became lunar-module pilot on Apollo 11. On Gemini 12, flown with James A. Lovell Jr. in November 1966, he completed three spacewalks totaling about five and a half hours and demonstrated procedures for working effectively outside a spacecraft. Apollo 11 launched on July 16, 1969, with Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and Michael Collins. After the lunar module Eagle landed in the Sea of Tranquility, Armstrong stepped onto the surface first, followed by Aldrin. The astronauts collected samples, deployed experiments, photographed the terrain, and returned safely to Earth on July 24.1
After Apollo 11, Aldrin used his public position to promote space education and long-term human exploration. He retired from the Air Force in 1972 and left NASA soon afterward, later writing memoirs and appearing widely in educational and cultural programs. His post-NASA work emphasized missions to Mars, including concepts in which spacecraft move between Earth and Mars using recurring orbital trajectories; these proposals became associated with the “Aldrin cycler” concept.2 Aldrin also supported the ShareSpace Foundation, which promotes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education. His advocacy has sometimes differed from NASA’s near-term mission plans, but it consistently centers on sustained human activity beyond Earth.
Aldrin’s less visible contribution to Apollo was the practical study of rendezvous and spacewalking, not merely the historic lunar step. His MIT doctoral work helped establish his nickname, “Dr. Rendezvous,” and his Gemini 12 mission tested restraint and body-positioning methods that made extravehicular activity more manageable. He also carried a small personal memento to the Moon: communion elements, which he used privately in the lunar module before the surface excursion.1 The Apollo 11 crew’s scientific work included the Early Apollo Scientific Experiment Package, among it a passive seismic experiment, a laser-ranging retroreflector, and a solar-wind experiment. These instruments extended the mission’s value beyond the landing itself.
