The Burmese python (Python bivittatus) is one of the largest snake species in the world, native to Southeast Asia, but it has become a notorious invasive species in the Florida Everglades, where it has disrupted the ecosystem since its introduction in the late 20th century.
The Burmese python is a large, non-venomous constrictor with a distinctive pattern of dark brown blotches on a lighter tan background. It is one of the largest snakes in the world, with adults typically reaching 3–5 m (10–16 ft) and occasionally exceeding 5.5 m (18 ft). The species was formerly classified as a subspecies of the Indian python (Python molurus), but genetic studies have elevated it to full species status as Python bivittatus.1
Burmese pythons are sexually dimorphic, with females generally larger and heavier than males. They possess heat-sensing pits along the upper lip, which aid in locating warm-blooded prey in the dark. Their jaws are highly flexible, allowing them to swallow prey much larger than their head diameter.
In its native range, the Burmese python is found in tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, southern China, and Indonesia. It inhabits grasslands, marshes, and rocky foothills, often near water. It is an excellent swimmer and can remain submerged for up to 30 minutes.2
These snakes are opportunistic ambush predators, feeding on a variety of mammals and birds, including rodents, civets, and even small deer. In their native habitat, they are preyed upon by large carnivores such as tigers and leopards, and their populations are regulated by natural predators and diseases. However, habitat loss and hunting for their skin and meat have led to population declines in some areas, and the species is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.3
The Burmese python was introduced to the Florida Everglades through the exotic pet trade, with escaped or released individuals establishing a breeding population by the 1990s. The first confirmed reproduction in the wild was documented in 1992, and by the 2000s, the population had exploded, with estimates ranging from tens of thousands to over 100,000.4
The python's impact on the Everglades ecosystem has been severe. Studies have documented dramatic declines in mammal populations, including raccoons, opossums, and bobcats, with some species experiencing population reductions of over 90%. The snakes have also been found to prey on endangered species such as the Key Largo woodrat and the wood stork. The invasion has prompted extensive control efforts, including hunting programs, research on detection methods, and public awareness campaigns.5
Beyond the well-known impacts, Burmese pythons have exhibited surprising behaviors and adaptations in Florida. For instance, they have been observed to prey on alligators, and in some cases, the alligator has turned the tables, leading to a struggle that can end in the death of both animals.
Another lesser-known fact is that pythons in Florida have been found to have a high prevalence of a parasitic worm, Raillietiella orientalis, which originated from Asian snakes and may be affecting native wildlife. Additionally, researchers have discovered that pythons can survive in saltwater environments, which could facilitate their spread to other coastal areas. The snakes also exhibit a remarkable ability to fast for months, and some have been found with multiple prey items in their stomachs, indicating opportunistic feeding.
Efforts to control the Burmese python population in Florida have been multifaceted. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has implemented a Python Action Team, which employs trained hunters to remove pythons from public lands. The state also holds annual Python Challenge events, encouraging public participation in hunting. In 2017, the FWC introduced a program that pays hunters a minimum wage for their efforts, and in 2020, the program was expanded to include a bonus for the removal of eggs.6
Research is also exploring the use of python-sniffing dogs, traps, and even genetic engineering to control the population. However, the vastness of the Everglades and the snake's cryptic nature make eradication extremely difficult. Scientists emphasize that prevention of future introductions is key, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has banned the importation of Burmese pythons and other constrictor snakes under the Lacey Act.7
Burmese pythons are also popular in the exotic pet trade, but their large size and potential for invasiveness have led to restrictions in many regions.
