Brain size

Brain size refers to the mass or volume of the brain, typically measured in grams or cubic centimeters. Across vertebrates, brain size varies enormously, from less than a gram in some fish to over 9 kilograms in sperm whales. In humans, the average adult brain weighs about 1.3–1.4 kg, but individual variation is wide, and brain size correlates only modestly with intelligence. The study of brain size has a long history, entangled with questions about evolution, cognition, and even social prejudice.

In humans, adult brain weight ranges from about 1.0 to 1.8 kg, with a mean around 1.3–1.4 kg; men's brains average slightly heavier than women's, even after adjusting for body size1.
