Design and development

The 747-8 was launched in November 2005 as a response to the Airbus A380, with a focus on efficiency and capacity. It is the third generation of the 747, featuring a 5.6-meter stretch over the 747-400, allowing up to 467 passengers in a three-class configuration. The aircraft uses General Electric GEnx-2B67 engines, which are quieter and more fuel-efficient than previous models, and incorporates raked wingtips that improve aerodynamic efficiency and reduce drag. The flight deck retains the familiar two-crew layout but includes modern avionics and a glass cockpit. Boeing initially planned a longer-range version, but the design was finalized with a maximum takeoff weight of 447,700 kg, enabling a range of over 14,000 km. Operational history

The 747-8 has been operated by a niche but loyal customer base, including Lufthansa, Korean Air, and Air China for passenger service, and carriers like Cargolux, Cathay Pacific Cargo, and UPS Airlines for freight. The freighter version has been more commercially successful, as the passenger variant faced stiff competition from twin-engine widebodies like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A350. The 747-8 has also been adapted for special missions: two aircraft were converted to serve as the new Air Force One (VC-25B), with delivery expected in the late 2020s, and the type has been used by the Japanese government as a military transport. Production peaked at 18 aircraft per year in 2013, but orders declined, leading Boeing to announce the end of production in 2020. The final 747-8F was delivered to Atlas Air on January 31, 2023, marking the end of the 747 program. Despite its limited numbers, the 747-8 has set several performance records, including the fastest transatlantic crossing by a commercial airliner in 2018.1

Variants and technical specifications

The 747-8 is offered in two primary variants: the 747-8 Intercontinental (747-8I) for passenger service and the 747-8 Freighter (747-8F) for cargo. The freighter has a nose door for loading oversized cargo and a payload capacity of 133.1 tonnes, making it one of the most capable freighters in service. The passenger version features a redesigned interior with a curved staircase and larger windows, but it has a lower maximum takeoff weight than the freighter due to structural differences. A third variant, the 747-8BBJ (Boeing Business Jet), was offered for VIP customers, with a range exceeding 15,000 km, and has been used by heads of state and private owners. The aircraft's cockpit is equipped with a heads-up display (HUD) as an option, and the wing design includes a supercritical airfoil that improves fuel burn by up to 16% compared to the 747-400. The 747-8 was originally proposed with a composite fuselage, but this was abandoned in favor of aluminum to reduce costs. The type has been used as a testbed for new technologies, including a 2019 experiment that flew a 747-8 with a laser-based communication system. The 747-8F holds the record for the heaviest payload ever airlifted by a commercial aircraft, carrying a 130-tonne generator in 2013. The aircraft's production line in Everett, Washington, was the largest building in the world by volume, and the final 747-8 was painted with a special livery to commemorate the program's end.
