Beryll crystallizes in the hexagonal system, typically forming prismatic crystals with a hexagonal cross-section. The structure consists of rings of six silica tetrahedra, with beryllium and aluminum in octahedral and tetrahedral coordination, respectively. This arrangement gives beryl its characteristic hardness (7.5–8 on the Mohs scale) and a vitreous luster. The mineral is usually transparent to translucent, with a conchoidal fracture and no cleavage. Its specific gravity ranges from 2.63 to 2.91, depending on the presence of alkali impurities such as cesium and sodium, which can expand the crystal lattice.

Varieties and gemological significance

The most famous varieties of beryl are gemstones: emerald (green, colored by chromium or vanadium), aquamarine (blue to blue-green, from iron), morganite (pink to orange, from manganese), heliodor (yellow to golden, from iron), and goshenite (colorless). Red beryl, also called bixbite, is extremely rare and found only in Utah. Emerald has been prized since antiquity; Cleopatra's mines in Egypt were a notable source. Aquamarine is the birthstone for March. The value of these gems depends on color, clarity, and cut, with emerald often being the most valuable due to its rarity and the challenges of cutting it because of inclusions.

Occurrence and mining

Beryl is found in granite pegmatites, metamorphic rocks, and hydrothermal veins. Major sources include Brazil (the largest producer of aquamarine and morganite), Colombia (emeralds), Zambia, Madagascar, and Afghanistan. The United States has deposits in Maine, Connecticut, and California, but production is limited. Beryl is the primary ore of beryllium, which is extracted through processes like the sulfate method or the fluoride method. The mineral is also used in the production of beryllium-copper alloys, which are valued for their strength and conductivity. Mining beryl can have environmental impacts, including habitat disruption and the release of dust containing beryllium, which is hazardous to health.

Lesser-known aspects

Beyond gemstones, beryl has industrial applications. Beryllium extracted from beryl is used in aerospace, nuclear reactors, and X-ray equipment due to its low density and high stiffness. The mineral also serves as a geochemical indicator for pegmatite evolution. A notable historical fact: in 1798, Louis-Nicolas Vauquelin discovered the element beryllium by analyzing beryl and emerald. Another obscure detail is that the term 'beryllium' was initially proposed as 'glucinium' because of the sweet taste of its salts. Beryl can also exhibit chatoyancy (cat's eye effect) when cut en cabochon, and some specimens are fluorescent under UV light. In ancient Rome, beryl was used for making magnifying glasses, as mentioned by Pliny the Elder.
