Benitoite is a rare blue barium titanium silicate mineral, first discovered in 1907 in San Benito County, California, and designated the official state gem in 1985. Its chemical formula is BaTiSi3O9, and it is prized for its vivid blue color and strong dispersion, often compared to fine sapphire. Benitoite is the only gemstone known to occur in nature with such a combination of barium and titanium, and it remains one of the rarest gem minerals in the world.

Discovery and occurrence

Benitoite was discovered in 1907 by James M. Couch, a prospector, near the headwaters of the San Benito River in California's Diablo Range. The mineral was initially mistaken for sapphire, but its distinct crystal habit and optical properties led to its identification as a new species by George Louderback, a geologist at the University of California, Berkeley, who named it after the county. The type locality, the Dallas Gem Mine (now the Benitoite Gem Mine), remains the only significant source of gem-quality benitoite, although minor occurrences have been found in Japan and Arkansas. The mineral forms in hydrothermally altered serpentinite bodies, often associated with natrolite, neptunite, and joaquinite.

Physical and optical properties

Benitoite crystallizes in the hexagonal system, typically as tabular or pyramidal crystals, and exhibits a deep blue to violet-blue color, though colorless, pink, and white varieties exist. It has a Mohs hardness of 6–6.5, making it somewhat soft for everyday jewelry, but its high refractive index (1.757–1.804) and strong dispersion (0.046) give it exceptional brilliance and fire. Benitoite is strongly dichroic, showing blue and colorless to pale blue pleochroic colors, and it fluoresces bright blue under shortwave ultraviolet light, a diagnostic feature. Its specific gravity ranges from 3.65 to 3.68, and it is brittle with a conchoidal fracture.

Rarity and value

Gem-quality benitoite is exceedingly rare, with the majority of crystals being too small or flawed for faceting. The Benitoite Gem Mine has produced only a few thousand carats of cut stones, and crystals over one carat are exceptionally scarce. In 2014, a 6.52-carat faceted benitoite sold at auction for over $100,000, setting a record for the mineral. The rarity is compounded by the fact that the mine is closed to large-scale commercial extraction, operating primarily as a fee-dig site for collectors. Benitoite is often cut in the United States, and its value is influenced by color intensity, clarity, and size, with deep blue stones commanding the highest premiums.

Benitoite is the only gemstone that exhibits a strong blue fluorescence under shortwave UV light, a property that can be used to distinguish it from sapphire. The mineral was once thought to be a variety of the zeolite group, but it is now classified as a cyclosilicate, with a unique ring structure of silicate tetrahedra. In 1985, California designated benitoite as its official state gem, but it is also the official gem of San Benito County. The Benitoite Gem Mine is the only place in the world where benitoite is found in commercial quantities, and it is also a source of the rare minerals neptunite and joaquinite, which are prized by collectors. Benitoite has been synthesized in laboratories, but synthetic crystals are not used in jewelry due to their small size and high production cost.
