Beacon, Iowa

Beacon is located at 41°16′N 92°37′W, along the Des Moines River in southeastern Mahaska County. The city covers approximately 1.0 square mile, with a small portion of water area. The terrain is gently rolling, typical of the Southern Iowa Drift Plain, with elevations around 850 feet. The climate is humid continental, characterized by hot, humid summers and cold winters. Average annual precipitation is about 36 inches, with the wettest months being May and June. Severe weather, including thunderstorms and occasional tornadoes, is common in spring and early summer.

According to the 2020 census, Beacon had 494 residents, a decrease from 518 in 2000. The population density was about 499 people per square mile. The racial makeup was predominantly White (96.6%), with small percentages of other races. The median age was 39.5 years, slightly higher than the state average. The median household income was $52,500, and about 12% of the population lived below the poverty line. Housing units totaled 220, with an owner-occupancy rate of 78%.

Beacon was platted in 1881 as a coal mining town, named after the beacon lights used in the mines. The town grew rapidly with the coal industry, but declined after mining ceased in the early 20th century. Today, the economy is primarily based on agriculture and commuting to nearby Oskaloosa, which offers manufacturing and retail jobs. The city has a small commercial district and a community center. Historic coal mining remnants, such as slag piles, are still visible in the area.

Beacon is one of several Iowa towns that owe their existence to coal mining, but it is notable for its name's origin: the beacon lights that guided miners underground. The city's population peaked at over 1,000 in the 1910s, but declined sharply after the mines closed. Beacon has no post office; residents use Oskaloosa's ZIP code. The city is served by the Oskaloosa Community School District, and its small size means it has no public library or police department, relying on county services. Despite its obscurity, Beacon appears in the 1980 film The Blues Brothers as a fictional stop on the Illinois route, though the actual filming took place elsewhere.
