Babymetal is a Japanese kawaii metal band formed in 2010, blending idol pop with heavy metal. The group is known for its choreographed performances, teenage vocalists, and a concept that fuses the "kawaii" (cute) aesthetic with metal's aggression.
Babymetal was formed in 2010 by the talent agency Amuse Inc. as a sub-unit of the idol group Sakura Gakuin. The original lineup consisted of Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-metal) as lead vocalist, and Moa Kikuchi (Moametal) and Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal) as dancers and backup vocalists. Their debut single "Doki Doki ☆ Morning" was released in 2011, and they gained international attention with the viral music video for "Gimme Chocolate!!" in 2013.1
Babymetal's music combines elements of J-pop, heavy metal, and electronic dance music, often featuring fast tempos, heavy guitar riffs, and polished vocal harmonies. The band has cited influences from metal acts like Metallica and Slipknot, as well as idol groups like AKB48. Their sound is characterized by a juxtaposition of "kawaii" melodies with aggressive instrumentation, a style they term "kawaii metal."
Babymetal's international breakthrough came with the release of their self-titled debut album in 2014, which charted in several countries. They performed at major festivals such as Sonisphere and Reading and Leeds, and their 2016 album Metal Resistance reached number 15 on the UK Albums Chart. They have since toured extensively worldwide, including a 2019 arena tour of the US.2
In 2018, Yui Mizuno left the group due to health issues, and was replaced by a series of supporting dancers. In 2023, the band introduced a new member, Momoko Okazaki (Momometal), as a permanent third member. The band's sound has evolved with each album, incorporating more progressive and symphonic elements, as heard on The Other One (2023).3
Babymetal's choreography is meticulously crafted by dance instructor Mikiko, who also works with other idol groups. The band's concept includes a "Fox God" mythology, which is referenced in their lyrics and stage shows. They have collaborated with artists such as Rob Halford of Judas Priest and have performed with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, the band has a tradition of performing a song called "Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!" where Su-metal throws a paper airplane into the crowd.
