Geography and Environment

Aurora is characterized by a long, irregular coastline along the Philippine Sea, with the Sierra Madre mountain range forming its western boundary. This topography creates a narrow coastal plain that expands in the central part of the province. The province is traversed by several rivers, including the Dingalan, Umiray, and Casiguran rivers, which are vital for irrigation and transportation. The Sierra Madre, one of the longest mountain ranges in the Philippines, is a biodiversity hotspot, hosting numerous endemic species. The province's forests are part of the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park, a protected area that extends into neighboring provinces. The climate is tropical, with no distinct dry season, but the eastern coast is frequently hit by typhoons, making the province prone to landslides and flooding.

History and Culture

The area now known as Aurora was historically inhabited by indigenous groups such as the Dumagat and Alta, who practiced shifting cultivation and coastal fishing. Spanish colonizers established missions in the 17th century, but the region remained sparsely populated due to its isolation. In 1902, the area was organized as a district of Nueva Ecija, and later became part of Tayabas (now Quezon). The province was named in honor of Aurora Aragon Quezon, the wife of President Manuel L. Quezon, who was born in Baler, now the provincial capital. Aurora became a sub-province of Quezon in 1951 and a full province on August 13, 1979, through Batas Pambansa Blg. 7. The province celebrates the Aurora Day festival every August, commemorating its founding, and the Sabutan Festival in September, which highlights the weaving of sabutan palm leaves, a traditional craft.

Economy and Livelihood

Agriculture and fishing are the primary economic drivers in Aurora. The province produces rice, coconut, and bananas, with coconut being the leading cash crop, processed into copra and oil. Fishing is significant along the coast, with municipal fisheries providing livelihood to many families. The province also has potential for eco-tourism, with attractions such as the Ditumabo Mother Falls, Dicasalarin Cove, and the Baler Bay surfing area. The government has promoted Aurora as a surfing destination, hosting the Aurora Surfing Cup annually. However, infrastructure remains limited, with the main road, the Baler-Casiguran Highway, being a two-lane route that is often affected by weather. The province's economy is also supported by remittances from overseas Filipino workers, which contribute to local consumption and small-scale businesses.

Lesser-known aspects

Aurora is home to the Baler Church, a 17th-century Spanish-era church that survived the Siege of Baler in 1898, a 337-day standoff between Spanish soldiers and Filipino revolutionaries, which is commemorated as a symbol of Spanish-Filipino friendship. The province also has a unique cultural blend, with the Dumagat people preserving their animistic traditions, including the 'bulung' healing rituals. Aurora's coastline is a nesting site for marine turtles, particularly in the barangay of Dibut, where conservation efforts are ongoing. The province is also known for its 'sabutan' weaving, a craft using palm leaves to create hats and bags, which is recognized as a cultural heritage. Additionally, Aurora is one of the few provinces in the Philippines where the 'baler' (a type of boat) is still used for fishing, reflecting its maritime heritage.
