The Aspen Parkland is a transitional ecoregion in western Canada, lying between the boreal forest to the north and the grasslands of the Great Plains to the south. It is characterized by groves of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) interspersed with fescue grasslands, forming a mosaic that supports a rich diversity of wildlife. This ecotone stretches from central Alberta through central Saskatchewan into southwestern Manitoba, with a smaller outlier in eastern British Columbia. Its unique blend of forest and prairie makes it one of Canada's most productive agricultural regions, while also serving as critical habitat for species such as elk, moose, and the endangered prairie rattlesnake.

Geography and climate

The Aspen Parkland occupies a broad belt roughly 500 km wide, extending from the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta eastward to the Manitoba Escarpment. It is underlain by glacial till and lacustrine deposits, with rolling plains and numerous shallow wetlands known as potholes. The climate is subhumid continental, with cold winters and warm summers; precipitation ranges from 300 to 600 mm annually, with a peak in late spring and early summer. This moisture regime supports a patchwork of aspen groves on moist, north-facing slopes and in depressions, while drier uplands carry rough fescue (Festuca hallii) grassland. The transition between forest and prairie is often sharp, influenced by fire, grazing, and soil moisture gradients.

The Aspen Parkland is a biodiversity hotspot, hosting over 300 bird species, including the threatened ferruginous hawk and the endemic Baird's sparrow. Large mammals such as elk, white-tailed deer, and moose thrive in the forest-grassland mosaic, while the region is one of the last strongholds of the plains bison in the wild. The understory of aspen groves is rich in shrubs like saskatoon berry and chokecherry, which provide food for wildlife and were historically harvested by Indigenous peoples. Today, the region is part of Canada's breadbasket, producing significant yields of canola, barley, and pulses. The parkland's fertile black chernozem soils are among the most productive in the world, but intensive agriculture has reduced native grassland cover to less than 20% of its original extent. Historically, the region was a key fur-trade corridor, with forts like Fort Edmonton serving as hubs.
